I was emailing earlier this week with David Gushee, a professor at McAfee School of Theology in Georgia and author of The Future of Faith in American Politics: The Public Witness of the Evangelical Center. He's plugged into Evangelical trends, and he had some things to say that the McCain camp really should worry about. When I asked him how McCain's doing among evangelicals, Gushee replied: I sense little white Evangelical enthusiasm for McCain, and don't expect a serious get out the vote effort from evangelicals for him. I sense sometimes high enthusiasm for Obama among younger center and left evangelicals, and of course high enthusiasm in the black church community overall. The deep structure of American politics, as well as the politics of race, makes me think that at best Obama will cut into the white Evangelical vote by five percentage points. Clearly Obama has the better religious outreach operation and is more articulate about his faith. I wrote about McCain and evangelicals in my column this week about Bush's Africa legacy and how it could help McCain among evangelicals. : I sense, though, that McCain and his folks really don't understand this movement and some of its shifts. As a result, that could really hurt him in November. If indeed he loses tive percent of evangelicals to Obama, that's a serious share of the GOP base going elsewhere. ...

In our first thread, we learned that Barack Obama is pro-choice but anti-abortion, pro-military but anti-war, opposed to evil, against torture (especially evil torture), against Clarence Thomas, against prostitution and human trafficking, against designing embryos for stem cell research and human cloning, pro-international community but in favor of the Bosnia intervention. Very, very pro-empathy, over all. He’s even against children becoming orphans. Here’s the thread for the John McCain portion of the Saddleback Church event, as Obama exits to a standing ovation. ...

Italy (MNN) -- And finally, in Italy, while boasting a Christian population, very few Italians have a true relationship with Christ. However, a church in Palermo is praying that will change as they distribute 2500 copies of the Book of Hope . Since many in the church are teachers, they've introduced the book to the religion teachers. Now many have adopted the Book of Hope as the official religion hour book. Pray that many kids will respond to its saving message. ...
