Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice warned Iran on Thursday that the United States will not back down in the face of threats against Israel. Iran answered with another Missile launch. Iranian state television portrayed the missiles, fired Wednesday and again overnight, as a demonstration of the country's ability to defend itself against an attack by Israel or the United States. The weapons included missiles launched from naval ships in the Persian Gulf, along with torpedoes and surface-to-surface missiles, the broadcast said. A U.S. official said Thursday that analysts had determined Tehran launched seven ballistic missiles and two rockets on the first night. But it appeared that only one weapon - an anti-ship Missile - was launched on the second night, the official said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on the record about the ongoing intelligence analysis. Just hours earlier on Thursday, Rice had closed her three-day European trip with a stern response to Iran: "We are sending a message to Iran that we will defend American interests and the interests of our allies." Rice noted U.S. efforts to increase its own security presence in the Persian Gulf and the Defense capabilities of U.S. allies there. "We take very, very strongly our obligations to help our allies defend themselves and no one should be confused about that," she said. Polish Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski said Tuesday that Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain would carry out the Bush administration's Missile Defense plans in Poland if he were elected. But Sikorski said he received no such assurances from Democratic candidate Sen. Barack Obama. Though the two spoke by phone Monday, Sikorski said he avoided discussing Missile Defense, the most urgent issue in Polish-American relations. "I did not think it was my business in my first conversation with him to raise a controversial issue," Sikorski told The Associated Press. The Obama campaign also said the issue did not come up. McCain has long supported the U.S. Missile Defense program, while Obama has been more skeptical of its effectiveness. The Democrat has said that a European Missile Defense system should be properly tested before it is built and deployed. ... Source: www.einnews.com --- 12 days ago

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama said Wednesday that Iran's Missile tests highlight the need for direct diplomacy as well as tougher threats of economic sanctions and strong incentives to persuade Tehran to change its behavior. John McCain, the Republican seeking the presidency, said the tests demonstrate a need for effective Missile Defense, including Missile Defense in Europe and the Defense system the U.S. plans with the Czech Republic and Poland. Forging an agreement with the Czech Republic to host the radar for the U.S.’s planned Missile shield project represents, according to Condoleezza Rice, a way of making the Missile Defense system “transparent to the Russians.” Officials in Moscow, however, are inclined to take this latest move as a hostile gesture that could provoke military retaliation. Times Online: Moscow argues that the Missile shield would severely undermine the balance of European security and regards the proposed Missile shield based in two former Communist countries as a hostile move. “We will be forced to react not with diplomatic, but with military-technical methods,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement. The ministry did not detail what its response might entail. Dr Rice, the US Secretary of State, hailed the agreement as a step forward for international security. After 14 months of negotiations, the US is struggling to clinch agreement with its other proposed partner - Poland - where it hopes to locate the interceptor missiles designed to shoot down any incoming rockets. by Mark Silva Sen. John McCain, the Republican Party's presumptive nominee for president, said today that Iran's test-firing of missiles today -- including one reportedly capable of reaching Israel -- is renewed evidence of the threat that Tehran poses to the region and of the need for a disputed U.S.-sponsored missle-Defense shield in Eastern Europe. McCain also dismissed the notion of any "unilateral'' negotiations with iran -- with Democratic rival Barack Obama today calling the Missile tests evidence of the need for stepped up, direct U.S. diplomacy with iran in addition to tougher economic sanctions. "Iran's most recent Missile tests demonstrate again the dangers it poses to its neighbors and to the wider region, especially Israel,'' McCain said in a statement released by his campaign in Arlington, Va. "Ballistic Missile testing coupled with Iran's continued refusal to cease its nuclear activities should unite the international community in efforts to counter Iran's dangerous ambitions,'' the senior senator from Arizona said. "Iran's Missile tests also demonstrate the need for effective Missile Defense now and in the future, and this includes Missile Defense in Europe as is planned with the Czech Republic and Poland,'' he said of a Missile Defense shield that the Bush administration is trying to build in Eastern Europe to defend against "rogue'' states such as Iran. Russia opposes the missle shield. "Working with our European ...

(Here's a clip of that statement.) He's correct on both counts, but it's wrong to imply ( as McCain has in the past ) that Obama thinks the IRGC is not a terrorist organization. Obama's statement: “These Missile tests demonstrate once again that we need to change our policy to deal aggressively with the threat posed by the Iranian regime. Through its nuclear program, Missile capability, meddling in Iraq, support for terrorism, and threats against Israel, Iran now poses the greatest strategic challe ... Russia's new president, Dmitry Medvedev, Tuesday launched an outspoken attack on America's European Missile Defense plans, in the latest sign that policy towards the west is unchanged since Vladimir Putin. Medvedev denounced the Bush administration's plans to build a Missile defence shield in the Czech Republic and Poland, allegedly to shoot down a rogue Missile fired by Iran. He accused the U.S. of aggravating the situation and promised that Russia would respond appropriately. "This common [security] heritage cannot survive if one of the sides selectively destroys isolated elements of the strategic construction," Medvedev said, adding: "This doesn't satisfy us." Addressing Russian ambassadors in Moscow, Medvedev also dubbed Kosovo's U.S.-backed independence illegal and accused the Baltic states of glorifying fascism. "They are shuffling history like a pack of cards," he said. Medvedev's hard line in one of his first speeches on foreign policy since his May inauguration is likely to disappoint western observers. They hoped his presidency might usher in a more conciliatory era. ... Find more results for European Missile Defense on RSSMicro.com |
