This past Monday, June 30, members of the Somali community gathered with local activists at Terry Schrunk Plaza downtown for rally for peace in Somalia. The protest at Southwest 3rd Avenue and Madison Street was organized by the Center for Intercultural Organizing and the Peace and Justice Works Iraq Affinity Group to stand against the U.S. support of Ethiopian Troops in Somalia and recent military bombings—particularly the series of bombings that reportedly took place on May 1 of this year which killed 25 Somalis. As part of the Bush Administration’s “War on Terror,” the United States has been actively pursuing Al Qeada and other terrorist organizations in Somalia. The actions include the military and diplomatic support of Ethiopia, which invaded Somalia in 2006. Human Rights Watch called this invasion the “the biggest unreported Humanitarian crisis in the world,” and which led to the death of thousands.
