For the second time since its inception just over a year ago, the town’s five-member Board of Ethics has been asked to convene to consider a possible dilemma, but the board’s chairman is mum on the details, and some Town Board members are in the dark. Town officials gave required legal notice on the meeting Tuesday, but only said the board would discuss a  “personnel issue” in executive session, which is closed to the public. The meeting is set for 6 p.m., Oct. 6 at the temporary Town Hall office on Blossom Drive. Board of Ethics Chairman Kevin Merriman would not say Tuesday who requested the meeting and said that even he did not know what it will be about. “We want the whole board to find out at once, so individual members don’t start looking into the matter on their own,” Merriman said. He did say that the request came in the last five days, and it will be an issue that the board had not previously reviewed. The only issue the board has weighed since it was formed in the summer of 2007 was whether former town Attorney Michael A. Jones Jr. had a conflict of interest since his former partner, Jeff Morris, is now employed by a developer that had sued the town. A town Planning Board member, Dawn Grosso, raised the issue, and former town Supervisor Leslie Bamann called on the Ethics Panel to convene. Jones was cleared. Town Board members John Accorso, Peter Hessney, and John Palomaki said that they did not know what the issue could b ...

The Town Ethics Board met for about an hour and a half Monday night, but Chairman Kevin Merriman still declined to comment the content of the meeting. “Now, I’ll draft a statement, circulate it to the other board members and issue it to the applicants,” Merriman said Monday night. The board met in executive session, meaning that it was not open to the public. The applicants requested that the board review the unspecified matter late last month, Merriman said. The issue is one that the board has not previously reviewed. Issues brought before the board remain confidential unless one of the applicants chooses to make it public. The Board of Ethics was created by the Town Board in 2007 to provide town employees and officials — both elected and appointed — with opinions on questionable conduct or conflicts of interest. It last met earlier this year to weigh in on a potential conflict of interest issue involving former Town Attorney Michael A. Jones Jr. He was cleared. ...

If Reuters keeps reporting the facts of their articles in such a clear, straightforward, and comprehensible manner, one imagines they're headed for some fairly severe professional sanctions: An analysis of the two starkly different approaches to reforming the U.S. health care system offered by John McCain and Barack Obama suggests Obama's plan has the best chance of making health care more affordable, accessible, efficient and higher in quality. The report, released on Thursday by the Commonwealth Fund, sized up the presidential candidates' plans for dealing with a health care system which has left nearly 46 million people uninsured and many more underinsured. According to the report, Democrat Obama's plan would cover 34 million of the nation's projected 67 million uninsured people in 10 years, compared with just 2 million covered under Republican John McCain's plan. Don't they want to obfuscate those conclusions a bit, or possibly give prominent play to some McCain campaign adviser lying about the facts of McCain's health care proposal? As currently written, the reader walks away with a clear understanding of the evidence presented in the article and can't help but realize that one candidate's plan is substantively better than the other candidate's plan. Something's terribly wrong here. ...
