Related Articles Direct Ethanol Production from barley beta-glucan by sake yeast displaying Aspergillus oryzae beta-glucosidase and endoglucanase. J Biosci Bioeng. 2008 Jun;105(6):622-7 Authors: Kotaka A, Bando H, Kaya M, Kato-Murai M, Kuroda K, Sahara H, Hata Y, Kondo A, Ueda M Three beta-glucosidase- and two endoglucanase-encoding genes were cloned from Aspergillus oryzae, and their gene products were displayed on the cell surface of the sake yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae GRI-117-UK. GRI-117-UK/pUDB7 displaying beta-glucosidase AO090009000356 showed the highest activity against various substrates and efficiently produced Ethanol from cellobiose. On the other hand, GRI-117-UK/pUDCB displaying endoglucanase AO090010000314 efficiently degraded barley beta-glucan to glucose and smaller cellooligosaccharides. GRI-117-UK/pUDB7CB codisplaying both beta-glucosidase AO090009000356 and endoglucanase AO090010000314 was constructed. When direct Ethanol fermentation from 20 g/l barley beta-glucan as a model substrate was performed with the codisplaying strain, the Ethanol concentration reached 7.94 g/l after 24 h of fermentation. The conversion ratio of Ethanol from beta-glucan was 69.6% of the theoretical Ethanol concentration produced from 20 g/l barley beta-glucan. These results showed that sake yeast displaying A. oryzae cellulolytic enzymes can be used to produce Ethanol from cellulosic materials. Our constructs have higher Ethanol produc ...

Amidst drastic rises in the price of petroleum, two entrepreneurs in Medford are engineering a revolutionary cost-saving method for producing the gasoline additive, Ethanol. Most Ethanol produced in the U.S. comes from cornstarch, which is largely made from corn grain. Based in Medford, Agrivida Inc. is developing a way to make Ethanol from cellulose, the structural component in plant cell walls. Ethanol reduces the green house gas emissions of petroleum-based fuel and is a sustainable product. “We’re looking at how you can optimize feed stocks so that crops can be more easily degraded into sugars,” said Jeremy Johnson, who co-founded Agrivida with Michael Raab. “Our goal is to turn what’s called ‘corn stover’ into Ethanol Production. Using corn stover, or the leaves and stalks of the crop, would leave corn kernels for use as food. Raab and Johnson are trying to develop crops that already produce the enzymes needed to break down cellulose into sugars. This would drastically cut back on the amount of post-harvest Production required to make Ethanol. The trick is to engineer a trigger for the enzymes to start breaking down the crop, but that won’t occur before the harvest. That, Johnson said, will take some time to develop. Johnson said Agrivida could have a testable product by 2010 and, if everything goes according to plan, a saleable product by 2012. “If it works spectacularly,” said Johnson, “we think the ability to produce etha ...

The new owners of an unfinished Ethanol plant outside Canton have been given a conditional permit to produce Ethanol. Riverland Biofuels bought the plant recently after Central Illinois Energy declared bankruptcy in December. About 50 employees lost their jobs. The plant had been started with the help of local farmers, who committed corn and money to the project. The farmers lost all their investments when the $90 million project came to and end after $130 million had been spent on it. Construction was not complete. Plant Manager Joe Werth said Wednesday that construction will be finished in seven to eight weeks, and the plant will be operational in September. The plant was planned to have a capacity of 37 millions of Ethanol a year. "Of all the possible outcomes there could have been, there could have been a worse one," he told the Fulton County Zoning Board of Appeals, saying the company will increase the tax base and create jobs in the county. As a condition of the permit, the company has 90 days to complete traffic and draining studies. The plant is almost fully staffed, Werth said, and all but 10 of the employees who were laid off after bankruptcy was declared have been rehired by the new owners. so biodiesel Production from waste oil produced by local restaurants has been among of my favorite science-like activities geared toward sustainablishiness and making enough money to drink my liver away faster than the polar ice cap is melting. but, since biodiesel Production still uses electricity for heating and mixing, as well as industrial chemicals, its really just more sustainabullshit that our kooky culture loves to pretend will save us from the savage waste world waiting just around the corner. so, in a effort to save a couple bucks and some power me and my esteemed colleague in denver have invented the world’s first Ethanol powered biodiesel processor. mutant freaks of the apocalypse, we proudly introduce you to the greasercycle. it works like this – you drink booze – Ethanol fuel – and pedal an execise bike with a barrel pump welded to it which is connected to a biodiesel processor. the greasercycle takes the place of the typical electric pump saving your sorry ass some money and electricity. you can use the sun to bring your oil up to processing temp, and/or an electric water heating element. almost all the parts are made from used junk and free shit. some parts were shoplifted from big ass corporate hardware stores. i’ll have to get some more pictures up and a bit of video for yawl to revel at this truly revolutionary creation. the greasercycle functions as the mixing unit on an appleseed type biodiesel processor (a conver ...

MANHATTAN – Some mainstream media came to a wrong conclusion while covering an economist´s June 23 report to the Environmental Protection Agency. Their error then is still fueling controversy from the halls of Congress to the World Wide Web. These media "quoted" Keith Collins - the U.S. Department of Agriculture´s newly retired, long-term chief economist - as telling the EPA that Ethanol Production has driven food prices up 30 percent. "Those media simply misinterpreted his findings," said Mike Woolverton, grain marketing economist with Kansas State University Research and Extension. Woolverton explained that Collins did say Ethanol Production’s use of so much corn had, in fact, had an impact on food prices. When Collins brought up the actual percentage, however, he was talking about Ethanol´s part of last year´s 4.3 percent rise in food prices. “Ethanol was responsible for 1.8 percent, and other factors accounted for the rest of the 4.3 percent increase. That´s actually in line with what the current administration has been saying,” the K-State economist said. “More impacts are to come, too, but not the great impacts that many people expect.” Woolverton said he hopes Congress won’t change too much when it revisits the mandated usage standards for Ethanol.     "Reducing or eliminating the mandate would give the wrong message to alternative energy producers," he said. "We´re going to need alternative energy in all of its forms." Jun ...
