By James Ramsden Oliver Slovodetsky bats for Reval © James Ramsden Kalev Cricket Club retained their Westons Estonian Premier League trophy in dark and windy conditions last week, beating Reval CC at the Tallinn Hippodrome by 60 runs. Looking at the dark clouds looming, it was always going to be an important toss to win, and Reval's stand-in skipper Oliver Slovodetsky had his first decision of the day to make when he won the toss. He decided to make full use of the cloud cover and put Kalev into bat. Kalev batted solidly for the first 15 overs out of the 35, putting on 40 for no wicket. Slovodetsky then turned to his spinner with instant success. Phil Marsdale did what the experienced fast bowlers Obli and Shiva couldn’t do and dismissed the Kalev openers in successive balls. Shiva then followed up the impetus with a wicket in his final over to leave Kalev on 47 for 4 off 17. This brought to the crease Hazelhurst and Mike Tiffin, the South African overseas player, who went about making up for lost time. Hazelhurst scored a quickfire 35 before holing out on the boundary and Tiffin remained undefeated on 68 after a few other useful lower-order scores. Kalev finished on 174 for 8 off 35 overs. ...

At the joint session held by the European Union Affairs Committee and the Foreign Affairs Committee, the Prime Minister introduced the positions of Estonia at the forthcoming European Council. France, the holder of the Presidency of the European Union, will organise an extraordinary summit of the European Union on Monday, 1 September, to discuss the situation in Georgia and the relations of the European Union and Russia regarding the Georgian-Russian conflict. According to Ansip, the European Union must review the entire spectrum of relations with Russia to give Moscow a signal that aggression towards another country cannot be left without any consequences. The Prime Minister noted that in the current situation, the European Union must decide whether it is appropriate to enter into a new framework contract for cooperation between the European Union and Russia, according to the current plans. The current cooperation between the European Union and Russia depends on a partnership and cooperation contract that will remain in force until a new framework contract is entered into. Ansip promised to raise the issue of the expediency of continuing the visa dialogue with Russia at the European Council. The final objective of the visa negotiations is the enforcement of visa freedom between the European Union and Russia. The Prime Minister noted that in the current situation, the discussions over the enforcement of visa freedom with Russia would be ...

The following column is written by Annika Matson, editor-in-chief of Estonian business daily Äripäev online channel aripaev.ee An appeal from a well-known online vendor plumped down in my mailbox today, explaining that Estonia could be salvaged from foundering only if Estonians had more sex and, by doing so, also did breed. I took a liking to this idea as to one to bolster up our economy. Moreover, Estonian economy is listing precariously, and creative approaches to problems always pay off. The gravity of the situation can be perceived by reading a recent Eurostat news release. According to the latest data, by 2035 the population of Estonia will have plummeted by 7 per cent, and by 2060 even by 15 per cent. The same survey predicts that, unlike in Estonia, in 13 other EU countries there would have been a sizable population  growth by the same time. According to the estimates of the survey, Cyprus would have had the largest rise of 66 per cent.  The most serious fall would have befallen Bulgaria (28 per cent).  Estonia would have a population of 1,13 million in 2060. Estonia’s population today is 1,34 million, thus we would have 200 000 souls less. So, rather naïvely and emotionally, I shall now try and unravel how sex could deliver us from this certain economic doom. Firstly, in those scores of years to come we should not be able to replenish our own workforce and Estonia would be inhabited by an ever-growing number of Chinese, persons ...

Märten Ross, Deputy Governor of Eesti Pank, gave a presentation "Monetary Policy and Income Inequality - Some Observations" at the conference "The Day of Dignified Work" organised by the Confederation of Estonian Trade Unions. In his speech Ross provided an overview of the formation of employment and wages in recent years. "The rapid economic growth that followed Estonia's accession to the EU was accompanied by several positive effects: many people found a job and wage growth picked up. This was due to both the lack of labour force and the opening of the labour market. However, a precondition for a steady real income growth is equally growing productivity. Otherwise wage growth will bring along an excessive increase in prices, which are already under pressure because of the global price hike of commodities. Both wage and price pressures are subduing now, but if we want to continue to maintain employment and limit inequality, it is necessary to keep the labour market flexible and the monetary policy tuned to reducing inflation. Estonia's monetary policy is considered reliable. According to the barometers of the Estonian Institute of Economic Research, people expect inflation to drop during the next 12 months," said Ross. ...
