"In my exit meeting with Mark Shapiro and Eric Wedge, they told me they're trying to find another infielder," Peralta said as he cleaned out his locker Monday morning at Progressive Field. "They don't know if it's going to be a second baseman or a third baseman." If it's a second baseman, Asdrubal Cabrera is expected to move to short with Peralta moving to third. "When I start playing winter ball, I'm going to call Mark to see where I should play," Peralta said. http://www.cleveland.com/tribe/index.ssf/2008/09/peralta_open_to_a_move_to_thir.html ... Eric Wedge: This is a real screwball one, but his odds are better than you think (though still not good). Here’s the key point on his favor: he was barely 35 years old when he started managing the Indians, making him the youngest person to fill out the lineup card in the last 25 years. He has nearly 500 wins, but he’s still younger today than Mike Scioscia was upon his hiring as Angels manager. If he’s respected enough to last a while, he’ll pick up some very impressive career counting stats. If he lands some playoff teams in the process, he’ll have a legitimate Hall of Fame case. I don’t see it happened, though. I don’t follow the Indians too closely, but that team usually does a little worse than expectations, which I take as a knock on the manager. An early start puts him in a good position, but he’s got to make the most of his opportunities. To date, he’s failed badly at that. ... Source: msn.foxsports.com --- 33 days ago
Cleveland Indians pitcher Anthony Reyes will likely miss his Wednesday start at Baltimore because of a sore elbow. The right-hander left his start Friday at Kansas City after three scoreless innings and 39 pitches due to elbow stiffness. "There's a pretty good chance we'll skip his next start," manager Eric Wedge said on Saturday. Reyes said his elbow felt better on Saturday, but the Indians will likely be cautious because of his prior elbow problems. He was on the St. ... Source: msn.foxsports.com --- 19 days ago
With the exception of the boos that rained down on Gary Sheffield, all was quiet at Progressive Field on Saturday night. While Sheffield was the center of attention one night after his role in a bench-clearing brawl, both teams stuck to baseball. There was only one hit batter that didn't cause an incident in Cleveland's 6-3 victory over Detroit. "It was good for both teams that we were able to play baseball," Indians manager Eric Wedge said, likely summing up the feeling of everyone. ... Source: www.scout.com --- 20 days ago
With one series to go before the 2008 All-Star break, I thought there were signs that manager Eric Wedge was “losing” his team. Some players didn’t appear to be giving 100 percent. Mental mistakes, usually a clear indication of that situation, were happening all too frequently. There were little things that didn’t show up in a box score, but had a big hand in the Indians' 10 straight losses. ... Source: slam.canoe.ca --- 10 days ago

Two days after their so-so season ended with a third-place finish, the Cleveland Indians were still waiting for someone to dethrone them as AL Central champions. The Minnesota Twins and Chicago White Sox were forced to Game No. 163 to decide the division title, and that brought some slight satisfaction to Indians manager Eric Wedge. “I do like the fact that they have to work for it,” Wedge said. On Tuesday, Wedge sat down and assessed a disappointing 2008 season for the Indians, whose plans to play deep into October were scuttled by early summer amid a string of injuries to stars Travis Hafner, Victor Martinez and Jake Westbrook, a flammable bullpen and the front office’s decision to trade ace CC Sabathia for prospects rather than wait and watch him leave as a free agent without compensation. Wedge didn’t make excuses for the Indians’ 81-81 record, a disheartening mark for a club that came within one win of the World Series in 2007. But after the Indians dealt Sabathia to Milwaukee on July 6, when they were 37-51 and in the throes of a 10-game losing streak, they clawed their way back to .500 and on the way learned more about many of their young players. It was a tale of two seasons in Cleveland. “Nobody is happy that we finished at .500, but look at where we came from – that’s real and that does mean a lot to me even if it doesn’t to somebody else because there will be some carryover into next year,” Wedge promised. “One thing we ...
