Unbeknown to many westerners, there has been a fierce battle raging in Japan on the scale of the US civil war. It’s been dubbed “Japan’s toilet wars”. When I first read the headline, I naturally imagined a bunch of toilet bowls dressed in army greens and wearing camouflage, engaging in some form of guerilla warfare on the streets of Japan. But that would just be silly wouldn’t it! Let me tell you, like the end of most wars, it looked like the shit had really hit the fan. Sorry about tha.... ... Last week, Jason wrote a really good piece about the Secular Humanist view of This Life. I’ve spent some time since then considering what he wrote and what the corrolating Christian view might be. One thing I see is that the secular humanist view seems to look at history on a grand scale, [...] ...

1. What's wrong with Josh Beckett? That was the most important question to come out of the Epic, if often unsightly, ALDS Game 2 (Recap | Box Score). The Red Sox insist he is healthy. They figured he was due for a dominating start after an impressive bullpen session that followed his rust-shaking start in the ALDS. Instead, Beckett bore no resemblance to the dominating postseason pitcher he once was. Beckett devolved into a completely different pitcher, resembling a long reliever or No. 5 starter who tried to get by with trying to cut and sink the ball with velocity in the low 90s and, in a fifth inning in which he had no right to still have the ball, even in the upper 80s. Gone was the four-seam fastball with Life, replaced by the two-seamers and cutters that had no finish to them, as they kept drifting over the heart of the plate. ... "Politics, anyone?" Miami Premiere! BOOGIEMAN: The Lee Atwater Story (Documentary/Stefan Forbes/USA/2008) Featuring Mary Matalin, Mike Dukakis, Bob Novak, Sam Donaldson, Tom Delay, Howard Fineman, Ishmael Reed, and various other scary politicos! The Epic story of a Southern boy’s rambunctious rise from humble roots to political rock star. Atwater was the godfather of modern negative campaigning. He helped elect threee Republican Presidents with the vision of politics as war. But on his deathbed, Atwater apologized for everything. Or did he? Take a political marketing history tour, and see where Karl Rove and company got their ideas. Does negative sleaze-o-rama campaining win the White House? “HILARIOUSLY SHOCKING!”—IndieWire.com “A must-see!”—Jonathan Martin, Politico.com “Atwater’s spirit roars back to Life…a compelling portrait…The movie isn’t a knee-jerk lefty hit job. In fact, it shows that Atwater was a runaway success not just because he was a devious political operator, but because, in the words of one liberal reporter Forbes interviewed, the sass-talking, guitar-playing Atwater “was the most fun man I ever met.” -Patrick Goldstein, LA Times For full info and advance tics visit www.MBCinema.com Friends from BarackObama.com get member price of $7 This event was submitted by MyBO . BEN FOLDS 'Way to Normal' (Wingdings 171) (Epic) Before the release of Ben Folds' latest album, he and his band mates secretly recorded fake versions of nine of the 12 tracks, just to mess with file-share pirates. The prank epitomizes Folds' musical career as well as the new album: impulsively creative, profanely comical and a little sad. The lead track, "Hiroshima," is full of Folds' trademark thumping piano chords. But underneath the arena-rock atmosphere is an embarrassing true-Life story about falling off a concert stage and sustaining a concussion. Even at his most earnest and sentimental, as in the bittersweet ballad "Cologne," he can't help a passing reference to a certain diaper-wearing astronaut. ...
