The new Canon Eos-50D is the successor to the popular 40d but improves upon it with a new 15.1 megapixel CMOS sensor, an expanded ISO range of 100-12,800 (matching the Nikon D700 and D3), a new Live View mode with face detection, new 3.0" VGA LCD display, and Canon's new, faster, DIGIC IV processor. This hack uses CHDK -- the free firmware enhancement for Canon PowerShot cameras -- and LiveView to capture video to the camera's CF Card. There are still a few issues: LiveView shuts down after a period of inactivity, video can't be transfered via USB, and unlike your $79 consumer grade camera, the Eos 40d won't record audio. But what's a little challenge in the face of a good camera mod? There's no word on file format, frame rate or resolution (though the camera's display weighs in at 320 x 240), but there are lots of other juicy details available once you hit the read link. Filed under: Digital Cameras Official word says Canon's Eos 50D DSLR isn't shipping until October 6th , but we've found a number of pre-orderers that would beg to disagree. Take enthusiast Roland Lim for example, who has acquired a production unit and ran it through a series of basic, but entirely relevant tests. He's admittedly leaving the "comprehensive technical review" to someone else, but his laundry list of impressions is quite stout. We're told that the body is "essentially the same as the 40d," with the buttons, dials and LCD in exactly the same spots. In the end, he attempts to answer the all-important "should I upgrade?" question; thanks to this one being a mere evolutionary advancement of the 40d, he didn't think it was all that compelling unless you were still rocking some seriously old kit.
