While checking out my RSS feeds I saw a photo in a Mobility Site post that I thought for sure was some kind of photoshopped fake device because it seems like a wide and squat Motorola Q when you take a quick look at the photo. I then went back and visited the site and followed the link to find the Motorola VC6096 is a real Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional (touch screen) device. This is one of those Windows Mobile Enterprise solutions with a focus on transportation and logistics, much like those bar code scanning Windows Mobile devices you see at the Apple Store when you buy an iPhone or iPod. ... Meet the mobile wannabes. They will not be road warriors, but insisting on mobile support from employers. Already, nearly a third of smart phone users expense all or some of their monthly bills for wireless voice services to their employers, while 40 percent expense the cost of their wireless data access to their company. Forrester estimates that by 2012, 73 percent of the workforce will be considered mobile. - Corporate IT managers and vendors are badly underestimating the future demand for Mobility devices and services in the Enterprise arena, overlooking a new emerging class of mobile workers that rely on smart phones. Today's Enterprise extends beyond the physical reaches of the office — often to shopping malls, expositions, beaches, homes, and wherever customers need a service that the Enterprise provides. However, extending the appropriate business processes to these environments has been a challenge. To help, mobile applications have been developed but with limited success — usually due to the fact that the mobile phone or smartphone has been considered an inferior version of the desktop computer. To truly benefit from the capabilities of today's mobile devices and networks, process and applications professionals need to work out how Mobility can enhance an existing process or fix a flawed one. Thinking of the mobile smartphone as a development environment in itself will help your business truly benefit from the mobile smartphones' inherent advantages. ... Today's corporate Mobility initiatives in firms are usually centered on policies and tools that focus on mobile employees — mostly traveling information workers and task workers. In turn, Mobility vendors are also focusing their products, services, and marketing messages to address the needs of these two market segments. However, IT managers and vendors are dramatically underestimating the demand for Mobility in the corporate arena. Mobility, as we know it today, is about to be eclipsed by demand from all types of workers who want to use their personal mobile devices to access corporate applications. In fact, Forrester estimates that this mobile "wannabe" segment will account for 25% of all employees by the end of 2012. To successfully position Mobility products and services, device manufacturers, applications vendors, middleware providers, network operators, and others in the Enterprise Mobility ecosystem must understand both the current and future profile and demand factors of mobile wannabes and other categories of Enterprise mobile users. ... The German engineering group has announced a $4.3 billion (3 billion euro) overhaul that would cut about 16,750 jobs, sell off a unit and lower administrative expenses, Bloomberg reported. While administrative costs will see the bulk of the cuts, the company's Mobility division will incur restructuring costs of $224 million-280 million (160 million-200 million euros). Though Siemens said Q4 business has been "pleasing" so far, CEO Peter Loescher plans to cut up to $1.7 billion (1.2 billion euros) in general costs by 2010 and sell Siemens Enterprise Networks to U.S. financial investor Gores Group. Costs at the healthcare division will be $112 million-140 million (80 million-100 million) euros and the planned creation of the Siemens foundation will cost $560.5 million (400 million euros).
