*By Paul Kelso 23 Nov 2008* Ministers will meet in Biarritz this week to discuss French proposals for a change in EU law that could grant Uefa the power to impose financial controls and other powers over the English game. Uefa and the French authorities have become concerned at the financial gulf between the Premier League and the rest of Europe, and there is a growing lobby to impose limits on the amount of debt clubs can carry. The Premier League say the plans for a European version of the all-powerful French football regulator, the DNCG, represent an unacceptable level of interference, and chief executive Richard Scudamore dismissed the proposal as "ridiculous". On Sunday Frederic Thiriez, the president of the Ligue de Football Professionnel, hit back, warning that the financial might of the Premier League was a threat to "sporting justice". "Clubs that participate in the same competition must be subject to the same constraints," he said. "To counter financial doping, we propose financial fair play. It's a question of sporting justice if we continue with football at two speeds, which sees three English clubs in the semi-finals each season, the competition will lose its interest." The important thing about standing around a log fire in a village pub is to remember to rotate your position, or you will soon catch the whiff of singed winter coat. The Griffin 's Head in Chillenden has a belter of a log fire, which is just as well because outside it is a freezing mid-winter Kent afternoon.   My other friend Nigel*, who spends his working life on board ships and has risen to something very senior in the British merchant navy, is telling me that even shipping in the English Channel has to take the threat of piracy seriously.   As he tells it, vessel hijacking is nothing new, but has only recently been in the headlines because it has started affecting the oil trade , particularly out of the Arab Gulf and off Nigeria . He and his UK-based crew have been having regular training for years in how to behave in the event of a hijacking nearer to the Kent coast, and most interestingly what to do when the security forces storm the ship to retake it.   I'm still trying to puzzle out what he explained to me about keeping records of the crew's shoe sizes, so that after the decks have been sprayed with gunfire, the bodies can be identified by their shoes. I thought we would check out some of the other actors and actresses that, though they play smaller roles, are no less important the the 6 leading characters. Today’s choice is Robert Curtis Brown. He is the actor that plays Mr Evans, Sharpay and Ryan’s father, in both High School Musical 2 and High School Musical 3. There isn’t a lot of personal information to be found about Mr Brown, except that hew was born in April 1957 and he has a Bachelor’s Degree in English and Theatre Studies from Yale University and a Masters Degree from the Yale School of Drama…pretty impressive credentials. Robert has been acting for a long time and has done everything from tv commercials (currently appearing in an ad for Nexium), to stage, television shows, and big screen movies. He has appeared in dramas, comedies, musicals and even a soap opera. His movie credits include parts in “Trading Places”, “Dream Girls”, “Spiderman 3″, and “Bruce Almighty”. He is currently filming “Men Who Stare at Goats” due out in 2010, in which he plays Major General Brown. Robert’s television credits include a 2 year stint on the soap opera “Search for Tomorrow” as Alex Kendall. He has also appeared in “Matlock”, “Empty Nest”,”LA Law”, “The West Wing” and “Zenon: the Zequel”.
