We finally, finally got our mitts all over the very first Android device, the T-Mobile G1 -- hanging out in the crowd, waiting for the official announce, naturally -- and so far we like what we see. The phone is surprisingly thinner than we thought it would be, and it feels pretty solid in your hand (though they've opted for an almost all plastic device, no metal here). The keyboard seems usable and reasonably well thought-out, and the slider action is like butter, with a nice little swoop for good effect. But really, the pictures tell the whole story, so check out the gallery below! Gallery: T-Mobile G1 hands on Update: We're adding another gallery as we speak. Here's some initial observations: the browser is much choppier than the iPhone's, there seem to be two separate mail apps, one for Gmail and a separate IMAP app, and there seems to be no multitouch functionality. Filed under: Cellphones , Handhelds Good thing nobody's working on anything right now in the smartphone space , or this could be really bad news for Microsoft, whose current version of Windows Mobile lost the technology and usability edge a while ago, and is being bandaged up by the likes of HTC to keep the OS relevant to consumers. According to CNET, some of Microsoft's partners in the space are claiming that the upcoming Windows Mobile 7 has been pushed back to the second half of 2009, instead of the "early next year" they'd been expecting . Microsoft has yet to make a formal announcement about the release date of the OS or the specific feature set, so we can't exactly point our fingers and laugh, but we'd say crying big, Mobile OS tears into our morning cereal is certainly appropriate. Filed under: Cellphones , Handhelds The BlackBerry Pearl 8220 runs neck-and-neck with the Storm for the title of "most leaked RIM device of 2008," but for what it's worth, T-Mobile is just now getting around to announcing a date and price for the most fliptastic phone in Waterloo's ever-expanding lineup. That's good news -- but perhaps the best news is that the launch date just happens to be today (for one of the two available colors, anyhow). The black version of the 8220 will be appearing online and in T-Mobile stores today, while the dark red will be following on a week later on Monday, October 20. If you can't wait for the T-Mobile G1 's release, or just couldnt figure out if it's available or not and missed your chance to pre-order, T-Mobile has released a pretty full-featured emulator to play around with. It doesn't have everything (GPS is missing and a few functions just give an error message) but it'll give you a good taste of what's to come on October 22nd. Engadget Mobile is reporting that it looks like AT&T has set the prices of the Samsung Epix at $199.99 after rebates and the Fuze at $299.99. Still no hard dates on when these two phones are due to hit the shelves. Not much more to say, folks, except that now you know how much you're going to need to save if you're planning on re-upping a contract with AT&T for either one of these. ...
Today when I peeped at Engadget Mobile and saw the Propel, seen as the second image below, I had to do a double take. Did Samsung just take the SGH-i620 (first image below) and turn it into a dumbphone? That, they did. I think AT&T and Samsung would have been better off keeping it running on Windows Mobile and calling it the BlackJack III, since it doesn't look like we'll be seeing one. Comments [0] ...
