Stalwart Wiibrew developer bushing has released a new program called xyzzy, which other Wii homebrew developers may find extremely useful for their work. No, it's not the Wii exploit , so don't ask when he'll release it. Xyzzy is a quick code that bushing slapped together in a few minutes. It returns private key structures of IOS address spaces. It should automatically save the keys to a text file on the SD card, but it also displays it on screen for a minute (to the second) to allow you to copy them by hand if necessary. Here's what the program does, step by step, as enumerated in the readme: Download IOS11 from the Nintendo Update Server Patch it to remove the MEM2 protection (so the PPC can access all 64MB of it) Patch it to allow it to delete itself later using ES_DeleteTitle() Find an unused IOS slot (counting downward from IOS255) Install the hacked IOS11 there Reboot into the hacked IOS Copy the private key structure from the IOS address space into MEM1 Reboot back into a sane IOS Delete the temporary, hacked IOS Display the keys on screen Try to write them to a file on the SD card keys.txt Pause for 60 seconds to allow you to copy the keys down using pen and paper,if necessary And here's what Bushing has to say about the program: I wrote this a week or two after I killed a Wii trying to reproduce tmbinc s original Tweezer Hack. May it rest in peace. The first version of this code just used a patched version of IOS, which was ...

In the Part II of this series, you learned how to encrypt files in Vista and verify that users are unable to open the encrypted files. An important point to keep in mind is that although the user is unable to open the file, they can delete the file. You might be confused as to how this is possible. Here is the answer: The user has full-share and NTFS permissions to the file. These permissions include reading, modifying, and deleting the file. If the user does not try to open the file, the EFS subsystem isn’t required. If the user tries to open the file, the EFS subsystem intervenes and denies access. But users can simply delete the file, which they have rights to do as defined by the NTFS permissions. Remember, file Encryption is used to protect the contents of a file from prying eyes. It is not designed to protect the file itself. That’s why a properly designed share and NTFS structure is still critical even when using EFS. In Vista, multiple users can be granted rights to read and modify encrypted files. Right click the encrypted file that you want to share and click Properties. From the General tab, click the Advanced button. From the Advanced Attributes dialog box, click the Details button. Click the Add button. Select the user to whom you want to grant access to the encrypted file. Click OK. Once the appropriate user has been granted permission, they will be able to open the file. When an encrypted file is moved or copied from its ...

Vista includes two Encryption technologies: Encrypting File System (EFS) and BitLocker Drive Encryption. As with most technology, once you implement either Encryption technology, you might encounter some common problems. In this series of articles, we will take a look at some of the common issues that can arise with both technologies. If you cannot enable BitLocker Drive Encryption on your computer, you need to check if your motherboard is TPM compliant. This is not so much as a problem but more of a configuration issues. Without a TMP, BitLocker will not be enabled by default and you will see a message indicating that a TPM was not found. You can still take advantage of BitLocker without a TPM compliant motherboard. The workaround is to get an external USB key to store the encrypted keys. Each time you boot the computer, you will need to insert the USB key into the USB port. On the topic of configuration issues, if your hard disk is not configured properly (refer to the Lockergnome article called ‘Planning For Encryption In Vista’), you will receive the following message: The drive configuration is unsuitable for BitLocker Drive Encryption. To use BitLocker, please re-partition your hard drive according to the BitLocker requirements. To use BitLocker, your hard disk needs at least two partitions. The first partition contains startup information and the second contains the operating system and user data. You can download and run the Bi ...

It’s really not the end of the world if someone steals a thumb drive with all of your last year’s term papers on it. While thieves might get a giggle out of Use of the Deus Ex Machina Principle in Voltron, you’re not in any real trouble. If it’s full of tax forms and medical records, though, you had better hope it has some protection. Lexar’s new JumpDrive Solo Vault is one USB drive that’s up to the task of keeping snoopers out. With 256-bit AES Encryption that passes the rigorous Federal Information Processing Standard 140-2 Level 1 (the same one Uncle Sam demands for government agencies), it should be one solid wa Read | Permalink | Email This | Linking Blogs | More Images ...

This is easily one of the more useful freeware file Encryption programs around. Kruptos 2's file menu and icon interface are the picture of simplicity. Encryption is almost effortless. You can drag and drop files to the Kruptos 2 window, and the latest version adds support for dragging and dropping folders. The Encryption algorithm is Blowfish 128-bit or 256-bit, and fast. A key feature obfuscates file names but leaves folder names unaltered. The program offers a feature to see original file names with the proper password, but it is invoked one file at a time. However, Windows integration means you can perform all functions from your context menu. Unlike many similar programs, files in nested folders are all quickly encrypted as individual files. With a single click you can decrypt a file and edit it, and the file re-encrypts on close. Self-extracting encrypted files are created with a minimum of fuss. The Shred function deletes original files to DOD standards. The program does offer a nag screen for donations, but only once. Kruptos2, with all its features, is what every user needing simple file Encryption desires. ...

I am trying to configure a Cisco 881 router for SSL WebVPN access. I can make the connection, and receive and ip address via the SSL VPN. However, I can't ping or access anything on the local lan (192.168.100.x) through the tunnel. I've tried this on: 12.4.15-XZ (ED) 12.4.15-XZ1 (ED) 12.4.20T (ED) all with same results. The Australian Ministry of Defense (MoD) has come clean and admitted to the loss of a staggering 658 laptops and 121 USB flash drives since 2004. Only 32 of these laptops were recovered. This revelation came only after a parliamentary question was tabled, and the final figures are at odds with earlier indications from the MoD. There was no additional information available as to whether the lost laptops and flash drives were encrypted, though the likelihood is that the majority of them were not. Clearly, the issue of lost laptops and flash drives will be one to dog corporations and even governments for some time yet. To make matters worse, the recent development of "cold boot" attacks threatens to render disk Encryption less robust than it once was thought to be.
