Eric Lewis Liebowitz, 35, was shot and killed by Los Angeles police officers in the 5800 block of Balcom Avenue in Encino about 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5. According to an LAPD press statement, officers with the LAPD's West Valley Division responded to a call of shots fired in the 5800 block of Jamieson Avenue. But they were later directed to Balcom Avenue, one street over. Upon arrival, Officers Alexis Padron, Dave Soissons, Brian McDonald and Jason Duplantis were setting up a perimeter when Liebowitz emerged from a house with a shotgun, the statement said. Liebowitz walked toward officers and allegedly pointed the weapon at them. Officers fired, wounding Liebowitz. They ordered him to stay on the ground, but Liebowitz got up and attempted to reach for the shotgun, the statement said. The officers fired again, killing Liebowitz. A shotgun was recovered at the scene, and evidence suggests that Liebowitz allegedly fired at the officers, the statement said. However, the report did not say when Liebowitz actually fired his weapon. Police spokeswoman Sgt. Ruby Malachi said very little was known about the suspect. All but one officer, Duplantis, have served with LAPD's West Valley Division for more than ten years. The Los Angeles Police Department's Force Investigation Division is looking into the shooting. On the day of the shooting, residents living on Balcom Avenue described their neighborhood as a typical one; peaceful and quiet. "It's def ...

All right, I admit it; I’m a closet Pauly Shore fan. *watches the subscription rate plummet* I happen to think that the series of films he did in the early 1990s were laugh out loud funny, particularly Encino Man and Son-in-Law. I think Encino Man was the first thing I ever saw Sean Astin do outside [...] ...

Federal officials allege they employ a local street gang to distribute drugs and provide security. This weekend, Hollywood will officially celebrate a summer box-office record with $4.2 billion in U.S. and Canadian grosses as the early-May-through-labor-Day season ends. Of course, that's a little bit like saying that Michael Phelps won the 400 meter relay because they shrunk the length of the pool. The fact is Hollywood can only boast -- and barely at that -- that it set a new summer box office "record" due to higher movie ticket prices, not because more people actually went to theaters. Although box office revenue through Monday will top last summer’s $4.18 billion by 1% or less, the estimated 586.6 million total tickets sold will be down about 3.5% from last year and 10.2% from the modern-day peak in 2002, when the first “Spider-Man” came out. “Yeah, it’s great to have the record but it’s built on higher ticket prices,” said Paul Dergarabedian, president of the Encino-based data tracker Media by Numbers. Movie attendance has been virtually flat over the last decade despite year-to-year fluctuations, as studios and theater owners compete with computer gaming and other industries for the hearts and wallets of consumers. Even so, exhibitors have been able to hike ticket prices by an estimated 53% since 1998, to a national average of $7.16 (including matinees and other discounts) this year, according to the National Assn. of Theatre Owners. Angelenos, of course, usually pay a much stiffer rate as L.A. has some of the highest ticket pr ...

Filed under: Other Drama Shows , OpEd , Episode Reviews , Reality-Free ( Part 5 of 7 ) "You think givin' them some rice and a chocolate bar is gonna fix things?" - Espera This was by far the best installment Of Generation Kill we've seen yet. Burns and Simon stayed 100% true to Wright's account. I remember reading about the battle on the bridge at Muwafaqiyah and wondering what all that insanity must have looked like. To be so scared that, as Trombley put it, the adrenaline rush is so intense that it messes up your blood flow and some Marines achieve happenstance erections. It wasn't just the bridge battle that made this one such a memorable episode though. Along with the continuing escalation of stupidity by all those with higher rank, there were some great scenes where we saw Colbert, Fick, Hasser, and even Encino Man evolve. Clichéd as it may sound, war changes people and we're bearing witness to some pretty screwed up transformations. Filed under: Other Drama Shows , OpEd , Episode Reviews , Reality-Free ( Part 4 of 7 ) "Well sir, it's just that you're incompetent, sir." - Doc Bryan I've asked before, and I'll ask again: why aren't more of the good guys dying? When CIA-trained Iraqi friendlies get waxed by Saddam's Republican Guard because they don't have a clue? When leadership like Encino Man are floored to hear that they're stupid? When men like Captain America don't understand how using enemy weapons could cause harm? Why aren't more of the good guys dying? It's because of the bottom on the totem pole players. The Colberts. The Persons. The Ficks. The Esperas. It's because of them that we're getting to see their story as a humorous account on HBO and not as some sappy, tears in your eyes Ken Burns PBS documentary. With The Mummy 3 (or The Mummy: Rise of the Tomb Emperor ) opening today, I can’t help but notice how much people really don’t dig The Mummy series. Complaints ranging from Brendan Fraser being a horrible actor to cheesy one-liners to just flat-out stupidity, there’s a flock of haters following this series. I find the series slightly amusing because it's campy, not really meant to be taken seriously and slightly on the horror side, but I'm not really wanting to see the third installment. All the trailer does is makes me hungry for Papa John’s . After thinking about whether or not Brendan Fraser has ever really done a good movie (which is a separate topic in itself), a really hilarious idea popped into my head: what if the fourth movie (and you know there’s going to be one…that’s just how Hollywood does things now) took a totally different route and gave us a flat out comedy versus an attempted-comedy/action flick? What would I want to see? Finally, it hit me. Encino Man meets The Mummy , or as I am now calling it: The Mummy 4: Resurrection of the Encino Man . Why Encino Man? This movie is just flat out ridiculous. A total product of the 90s (co-starring Pauly Shore , for L. Ron Hubbard’s sake!): two brilliant/stoner guys came up with the idea of what it would be like if a couple teens found a frozen caveman in their backyard. Totally awesome, right? It is. It's hilarious, cheesy as hell and above all, entertaining. This was essentially ...

I met Lisa through my interaction with Microsoft as a VB MVP. We got a chance to hang out some at Tech Ed 2008 and via the VB mailing list. She's got a great sense of humor and is also one of the smartest people I've met. She's also incredibly busy, so I've been chasing her via email to bring you these NINE Questions with Lisa Feigenbaum: 1. Where are you from? Los Angeles, in the Encino area. (Yes, like the movie Encino Man.) It’s part of the San Fernando Valley. I’ve toned down the accent a bit since I moved, but my Valley girl roots still come through from time to time. For example, some might recall my Paula Abdul performance at the 2007 MVP Summit’s Developer Idol. 2. I know you work for Microsoft, but what specific area do you work in? Give me the 10 second pitch on them. Why would I want to buy their product? I work on Visual Studio Languages, primarily Visual Basic. I’ve been on the team for 4 years. Most of my time has been spent as the Program Manager for the Visual Basic Editor and Debugger (intelliSense, code snippets, edit-and-continue, etc.). Recently I switched into the VB Community PM role, where I can think more broadly about how to satisfy our *large* user base of VB developers. 10 second pitch: You should buy Visual Studio because it makes programming approachable, and makes it easier to do cool things! With the .Net Framework, Microsoft languages, and Visual Studio tooling, there is little you can’t do. 3. What brou ...

Who's Your Mummy Dearest? The Smackdown .  For years, everyone knew the Big Three of Classic Horror : Dracula , The Wolf Man , and Frankenstein .  That other Undead Dude, The Mummy was second-tier, a guy with a few flicks but not the endorsements ('Count Chocula', anyone)?  It's like he was the forgotten step-child.  All that changed, of course, when Universal decided to dust off the title to remake (sorry, 're-imagine ') and cast Brendan Fraser (Link from the classic  'Encino Man') in the 1999 version of "The Mummy."  The re-boot made a load of dough.  Money means more Mummy Mayhem, namely: "The Mummy Returns", a sequel of-sorts; "The Mummy: The Scorpion King;" and recently, " The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor ."  Four films in less than a decade.  Let's see how the original (well, the new original) holds up against the upstart, or our latest installment.  Let the mummification begin! The Challenger .  The prologue to "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" starts in Ancient China where an Evil Emperor, Han (Jet Li) is conquering the known world.  He has a vast army and his priests have shown him how to shape shift and control the elements.  But that's not enough: he wants Immortality !  It just so happens there's a Witch (Michelle Yeoh) who knows the Secret. The Emperor wants her for himself but she's in love with his general.  She gets the point (literally) that Han's not a nice Man and puts a curse on him and his army, turning ...
