Emmanuel Jal doesn’t fit your typical rapper stereotype. To begin with, he was actually raised to be a child solider in the war-torn country Sudan. Which would probably explain his “no hoes, no bitches, no bling” policy. As an aspiring hip-hop producer myself, it always inspires me when a rapper comes along and tries, [...] ...

On Tuesday afternoon, the sounds of students rushing through O'Neill Plaza were replaced by the songs of Emmanuel Jal, who took to the stage with a rap that summed up the events of his life as a child in Sudan. After his brief poem, which included solemn rhymes like "forced to sin to make a living," "I've seen my people die like flies," and "sometimes I'm doing wrong to make things right," Jal shared his story with the audience in 45 minutes. Jal, from southern Sudan, was born into a world of turmoil. Early in his childhood, tensions arose between the northern and southern Sudan. His father left his family after a rebel movement was formed in southern Sudan, and could no longer provide for the family. ...

Programme Summary Element: Action on Earth is designed to educate and activate young people through programming that combines entertainment with real-world examples of youth engagement in social change. The package of films and public service announcements (PSAs), complemented by an interactive website, is a collaborative creation of MTV Networks International, Television Trust for the Environment (TVE), Internews, and One World Broadcasting Trust (OWBT). The goal is to provoke, entertain, and encourage change among young people by profiling exceptional youth working to promote a greener, fairer world. Communication Strategies This initiative draws on television and the internet to inspire youth to make a difference in the world by introducing them to peers who embody lifestyle change, rather than simply preach about it. Amongst the young people profiled on Element are, for example, Emmanuel Jal, formerly a child soldier in Sudan, who is now "an internationally acclaimed performer using his music to combat poverty and promote disarmament." Another individual whose story is highlighted here is a man in his twenties who began fighting child slavery at the age of 12; "his efforts have created the world’s largest network of young people helping young people. They've changed laws, built over 400 schools and more." One may view all of the episodes on the Element website , which also features information on the Millennium Development Goals (M ...

The tracks on rapper Emmanuel Jal’s major label debut, WARchild , are a bit frenetic, drawing more inspiration from the syncopated rhythms of African pop than the beat-heavy ethic of American hip-hop. The reason is simple: Jal isn’t a product of the concrete jungle, but the actual one. A native of southern Sudan, Jal was forced into the Sudanese People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) at the age of six. After five years of fighting, he escaped to neighboring Kenya with the aid of a British relief worker, Emma McCune . Now in his late twenties (like many child soldiers, Jal is unsure of his actual age), he is drawing attention for his musical talent as well as his captivating life-story. At last month’s 46664 concert in London celebrating Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday, Peter Gabriel called Jal “a young Bob Marley.” “[He] came out of the horror of a brutal war, a brutal childhood with a clear voice calling out against violence, hatred and materialism. He’s going to have a huge influence in the world way beyond his music,” said Gabriel. This is already happening. A documentary about Jal, also titled War Child , has been making the rounds on the international film festival circuit. He has been a spokesman for Amnesty International and the Make Poverty History campaign. He is founder of Gua , a charity devoted to education and sustainable development in sub-Saharan Africa. For more on Emmanuel Jal, read Emily Geminder's profile on Policy Innovatio ...
