The new indie production company Werc Werk Works has stepped in to fully finance and produce writer-director Todd Solondz’s next film, an untitled part-sequel, part-companion piece to his controversial dark comedy “Happiness," says Variety. Founded by Elizabeth Redleaf and producer Christine Kunewa Walker ("American Splendor,” “Factotum"), the company will initially produce three to four films a year. Solondz wrote the screenplay, which revolves around a group of struggling individuals. struggling to find a place for themselves in an unpredictable and volatile world. The narrative is told through a series of intersecting love stories.; the past haunts the present and imperils the future: ghosts circle and loom, trouble and console. The project has been incubating for years, with Emma Thompson, Demi Moore and Paul Reubens rumored to be attached. “Happiness," which featured themes of child molestation and rape, initially received an NC-17 from the MPAA board but was eventually released unrated. Walker, Mike S. Ryan and Derrick Tseng are producing the untitled film. Exec producers are Redleaf and Ken Bailey. Newly added to my Movies You Might Not Know list: Stranger Than Fiction . It's the story of Harold Crick, an IRS auditor played by Will Ferrell, who wakes up one morning to hear the voice of a woman narrating his mundane life. It turns out that the woman (Emma Thompson) is a real-life author writing a book in which Harold is a fictional character. Crick goes to a university professor (Dustin Hoffman) for help and somehow gets involved with a quirky bakery owner (Maggie Gyllenhall), all the while living his life as the author describes it -- until she makes an editorial decision he can't live with. Don't expect Ferrell to be the same goofball he plays in "Semi-Pro," "Anchorman," and "Talledega Nights." This is a solid dramatic (though funny and touching) performance, similar to the break-out role Jim Carrey played in "The Truman Show." Look for Queen Latifah and Linda Hunt in small supporting roles. Stranger Than Fiction didn't do nearly as much box office business as it deserved, so I hope it finds an audience on DVD. ... When I heard about Facebook: The Movie , two thoughts came to mind: 1) Crap! Hollywood is now making remakes of websites?!! and 2) Crap! It's going to be one of those interactive movies like Mr. Payback . I'm going to go see Facebook: The Movie , and at the theater Hasbro will sue me, weirdos will try to befriend me, my identity will be stolen and the seat is going to try to SuperPoke me. Then I learned here that Facebook: The Movie is about the creation of the site, not the site itself. There's a Facebook group devoted to Aaron Sorkin's upcoming movie. I joined it, making it the third group I belong to on the site I joined solely because I was in grad school. Since they didn't ask my help in casting, I won't bother with FBTM . But here are some suggestions for other filmmakers thinking about making a movie about a website. The MySpace Movie : 40-year old Dakota Fanning (well she acts like she's 40, dammit!) stars as a horny little girl who gets wrapped up in the MySpace trend sweeping the nation. Emma Bunton and her partner Jade Jones joined a whole host of chefs at the Grosvenor House Hotel last night for the London Restaurant Awards. It looks like the slim Spice Girl's kept up her ballroom and Latin moves since appearing on Strictly Come Dancing — perhaps she had a chat with John Torode, who wore a rather splendid scarf, about appearing on Celebrity Masterchef ? Emma also cuddled up to that show's most recent winner, Atomic Kitten's Liz McClarnon, who will be presenting a four part cooking series for GMTV. Taking inspiration from my girl Buzz, the time has come to launch our very own virtual book club here on PopUK! Just like the Buzz Book Club , we will read and discuss a book every month. I've chosen Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh for our first foray this September. It's a timely decision, as a new DVD of the 1981 TV series was released today, and the film version (starring Emma Thompson and The Duchess ' Hayley Atwell) hits UK cinema screens on 3 October. Here's how it will work: each week I'll suggest chapters to complete by the next post (each Monday). In these weekly Book Club posts, I'll suggest a few discussion-provoking questions for us all to think over and respond to in the comments section. By the end of the month we will have completed this English classic together, and we'll be fully equipped to watch the film to see how it compares. Variety reports that new indie production company Werc Werk Works is financing Solondz's "part-sequel, part-companion piece" to the 1998 pedophile comedy. Like the original, Happiness 2 (our title) will be told through a "series of intersecting love stories" about a "group of individuals, struggling to find a place for themselves in an unpredictable and volatile world." The movie has apparently been kicking around for years, and the cast is thought to include Emma Thompson, Demi Moore, and Paul Reubens (so we guess there will be more masturbating in this one). The original got an NC-17 rating for its scenes of implied child molestation, but following the success of The Dark Knight , we'd imagine Solondz will probably try to make the sequel dark. SNOW Is about to fall on a freezing night in 1963 as a young girl goes missing on the moors. Place of Execution is one of the best TV dramas I’ve seen this year. Adapted from the novel by Stockport-based Val McDermid, it’s set in the same era as the Moors Murders. But this is a very different story... Robson, who does not appear in this project, was also at the launch. He said: “This is our finest three hours – it’s an absolute gem.” You’ll get no arguments from me. Lots more on Place of Execution to come nearer transmission. Cranford and Marple star Greg Wise plays 1960s’ village squire Philip Hawkin, one of several superb performances. Dry-humoured Greg is married to Oscar-winning actress and writer Emma Thompson. “We’ve just done a project together that she wrote and I argued with her about,” he told us. “And that seemed to work well. “It’s still in script form, we’re trying to raise some money for it at the moment. “We’ve just spent the last few months arguing and I think we’ve put together a nice piece of writing.” The plan is that Greg will star in the Victorian period drama. “It’s about art.” Meanwhile Emma is set to film Nanny McPhee 2. En mi opinión, Todd Solondz es uno de los autores que con mayor autenticidad ha retratado el mundo de sus obras. Aunque los seres marginales y atormentados hoy en día hayan pasado a primera línea, hay mucha falsedad en quienes se acercan a ellos. Sin embargo, Solondz parece saber de lo que habla, sólo hay que verle la cara. Todas las películas de Solondz me parecen buenísimas, pero quizá ‘Happiness’ se podría elegir como la mejor sin demasiado problema para encontrar unanimidad. A ratos te hace reír, sin que puedas evitar sentirte culpable. A ratos es devastadora. Siempre es muy real. La buena noticia es que el director y guionista ha anunciado que hará una nueva película, que ha descrito como medio continuación, medio acompañamiento . El guión trata de un grupo de individuos que luchan por encontrar un lugar en un mundo voluble e impredecible. Eso nos lo podríamos haber esperado, pero supongo que se anunciará algo más concreto más adelante. Se ha añadido que la narración se desarrollará a través de una serie de historias de amor que se entrecruzarán mientras el pasado acecha el presente y pone en peligro el futuro a modo de fantasmas que rodean a los personajes mientras los consuelan o les causan problemas.
