In a scene like many other around the country Thursday, a line of men and women in blue stood at attention outside the Waverly-Barton Fire Station early in the morning as they remembered the tragedies of September 11, 2001 and paid respects to those who lost their lives trying to save others. A short ceremony was held just before 10 a.m., approximately the time seven years ago when planes commandeered by terrorists crashed into New York City’s World Trade Center, the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Dr. Cynthia Huling Hummel of the Waverly Presbyterian Church — known around the area as Pastor Cynthia — offered a message of remembrance and hope. “Today we join with others around our state, around our nation, and, indeed, around the world to remember and to honor those who died and those who survived the terri ...

The multi-state Vigilant Guard, the simulated mock-terrorist attack officially got underway early this morning.  Members of the Guam National Guard along with first Responders and others are participating in the training to improve command, control and operational relationships against homeland security threats. Commander of the 94th Civil Support team Nick Legaspi said of the events, held in part in Upper Tumon at the campus of JFK High School, "They're very important because we get to work with the local Responders and understand what our capabilities are.  We're so far isolated from the mainland, if there is a terrorist attack with the use of weapons of mass destruction, we come out and train and understand each other's roles and responsibilities." The Vigilant Guard exercise wraps up on Thursday. Tags: Emergency , response , terrorist , vigilant guard ...
