Dear Gov. Palin, Congratulations on your performance tonight. You were comfortable, composed, and deft with the zingers, and there's no question you're easy on the eyes (you know, for a 44-year-old woman.) Still, I'm guessing I'm not the only American who was hoping you might talk a little more substantively about your passionate stance on the issues. You know, like reproductive rights. You see, my daughter started middle school this week (an event I apparently found a lot more traumatic than she did) and with my only child on the verge of adolescence, my parental anxieties have started to fixate on dark thoughts of the inevitability of (ugh) boys . I know what boys are like. I was one once. And thus, I hope my daughter stays away from them as long as possible. But she won't forever, and so in addition to what we teach her at home, I want my daughter to receive a medically accurate sex education at school. And while I sure hope she abstains until she's away at college (where thankfully, I'll never know about it), if, like the majority of teenagers, she does decide to become sexually active, I want her to have convenient access to effective birth control, Emergency Contraception, and God forbid, even the opportunity to safely terminate a pregnancy, should she so choose. Now, I know that you believe that every human life is sacred from the very moment of conception, and I respect your beliefs, but as a fellow parent I would hope that ...

Ayn Rand Center Press Release Let Doctors Protect Conscience by Contract August 28, 2008 Washington, DC--In its latest faith-based initiative, the Bush administration wants to shield anti-abortion and anti-contraceptive doctors from being fired for refusing to deliver such services. Opponents fear that proposed regulations creating “provider conscience rights” would leave rape victims without an Emergency room doctor to prescribe morning-after Contraception, or a pharmacist to dispense the pills. “This is the kind of political infighting that’s inevitable when doctors, hospitals, and patients are denied freedom of contract,” said Thomas Bowden, an analyst at the Ayn Rand Center for Individual Rights. “Such moral questions have no place in the political arena. Instead, the law should recognize each individual’s right to deal, or refuse to deal, with others on a voluntary basis. “For example, a doctor has the right to refuse an employment offer from a Catholic hospital that forbids contraceptives and abortions. But if he takes the job, he has no right to force the hospital to abandon its religious taboos and allow him to perform abortions. Likewise, a hospital has the right to hire only those doctors willing to prescribe Contraception and provide abortions. If one of those doctors refuses to perform such services on moral grounds, he must take the contractual consequences. “Patients have the same rights as doctors and hospitals to ...

Danio, guest blogger at Pharyngula, has a post advocating the denial of legal protection for health care workers who, because of religious beliefs or other moral objections, refuse to provide services such as abortions or Contraception. It’s hard to believe that any person with even a modicum of respect for individual rights would support taking legal sanction against physicians, nurses, and pharmacists who, because of genuine deeply held religious belief or other moral principles, believe that such acts as abortion or Contraception are immoral. From the standpoint of traditional medical ethics, healthcare professionals are only under legal compulsion to provide care in a life-saving Emergency. The controversial "treatments" in dispute are not emergencies, and are certainly not life- saving . That abortion and Contraception aren't life-saving is actually the point of the doctors, nurses, and pharmacists who are acting on conscience. Danio quotes HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt , who supports the conscience protections of the federal policy: Is the fear here that so many doctors will refuse that it will somehow make it difficult for a woman to get an abortion? That hasn't happened, but what if it did? Wouldn't that be an important and legitimate social statement?...Does the National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Association believe we can protect by Constitution, statute and practice rights of free speech, race, religion, and ...

The Emergency contraceptive/morning-after pill has three possible ways in which it can work (as does the regular birth control pill): Ovulation is inhibited, meaning the egg will not be released; The normal menstrual cycle is altered, delaying ovulation; or It can irritate the lining of the uterus so that if the first and second actions fail, and the woman does become pregnant, the human being created will die before he or she can actually attach to the lining of the uterus. In other words, if the third action occurs, her body rejects the living human embryo, and the child will die. This result is a chemical abortion. Two of the most commonly used Emergency contraceptive pills are Preven and Plan B. The websites for both of these drugs clearly indicate that each can work to prevent a fertilized egg from implanting in the uterine wall: "How do the PREVEN® Emergency contraceptive pills prevent pregnancy? PREVEN® can stop or delay ovulation (the release of an egg), it can stop sperm from fertilizing an egg if it was already released, and it can stop a fertilized egg from attaching to the wall of the uterus . " Source: http://www.drugs.com/mtm/preven-ec.html "How Does Plan B® Work? Plan B® (levonorgestrel) may prevent pregnancy by temporarily stopping the release of an egg from a woman's ovary, or it may prevent fertilization. It may also prevent a fertilized egg from attaching to the uterus . " Source: http://www.go2planb.com/ForConsumer ...

Reproductive Rights On August 21, 2008, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released proposed regulations that could seriously undermine access to basic reproductive health services, including birth control and abortion. The rule leaves open the possibility that based on religious beliefs institutions and individuals can deny women access to birth control and individuals can refuse to provide information and counseling about basic heath care services. Moreover, they expand existing laws by permitting a wider range of health care professionals to refuse to provide even referrals for abortion services. For years, federal law has carefully balanced protections for individual religious liberty and patients’ access to reproductive health care. The proposed regulations appear to take patients’ health needs out of the equation. There is a 30 day comment period, ending September 20, 2008. This is the time to make your voice heard and to help protect access to birth control. Send your comment to DHS today! ...
