To diffuse the fact that he would be the oldest person ever elected president, John McCain likes to talk about his gene pool -- and how his mother is still going strong at age 90. But the quality of one's genes is only one determinant of longevity. Considering McCain's history with skin cancer, who knows what his medical future holds. My understanding is that Sarah Palin is a nice lady. I certainly don't agree with her on most of the important social issues. Other than her interesting life story, I don't know much about her. I don't know if McCain knows much about her. God forbid something bad should befall a 72-year-old man who's had skin cancer. But if it does, is this truly the woman we want dealing with Putin on an instant's notice? For me, the answer is no. Transcript courtesy Federal News Service REP. Emanuel: Good evening. I'm from Chicago, the hometown of the next president of the United States, Barack Obama. (Cheers, applause.) In the 2006 election, Democrats, independents and even some Republicans scored a victory that President Bush himself called a "thumping." Well, Mr. President, as Ronald Reagan used to say, you ain't seen nothing yet. (Cheers, applause.) The truth is, the Bush crowd has been giving the middle class a thumpin'. And this November, the middle class is going to give it right back. This -- this election comes down to a simple question: do we want four more years of Bush-McCain or do we want the change we need? There is only one candidate from the middle class, only one candidate that understands the middle class and that can deliver the change the middle class needs: Barack Obama. (Cheers, applause.) A strong economy depends on a strong middle class, but George Bush has put the middle class in a hole, and John McCain has a plan to keep digging that hole with George Bush's shovel. Under George Bush, median household incomes have declined a thousand dollars, health care costs have doubled, college costs have doubled, and energy costs have tripled. Under George Bush, you're paying more and making less. If John McCain has his way, your bills will continue to grow and your paycheck will continue to shrink. Under George Bush, millions of Americans are without health ... Source: www.huffingtonpost.com --- 9 days ago
I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm really disappointed in the news coverage of this convention and moreover, this election. I didn't hear anybody talk about or analyze Senator Clinton's outfit until this morning. I think that these news organizations are not getting in-depth about the issues that are important to America -- they are not living up to the responsibility that they are mandated to have by our Constitution. In fact, last night my son came up to me (again) when I was watching the convention and said, "Dad, please turn off ESPN". He could only think it was ESPN due to the whole aesthetic of the broadcast with people behind the stage screaming things out, touting signs of their favorite "players" -- like a Superbowl or a college game day event. The only reason that one could tell that it wasn't said sports network was that the graphic with a guy in a helmet or someone bouncing a ball was strangely absent. They are analyzing as if this is a Clinton Convention and that Barack Obama is walking into a Roman arena filled with lions -- that narrative is apparently the most important issue involving our country. Is this the Twilight Zone? My suggestion to the news organizations would be to discuss the following: If you want to talk about experience, lets discuss experience. Neither one of them has run a country. No matter what you did before, you will not know what is like to run an entire country! Let's talk about Joh ... Source: www.huffingtonpost.com --- 10 days ago
Call me old-fashioned, but I could not believe last night's convention coverage: they were analyzing things as if it were college sports. I sat down with my sons last night to watch the convention coverage, thinking I was exposing them to something important, and I was amazed. It was truly like football game analysis -- the news has turned into football game analysis! The media have kept this race close so that the public will keep tuning in. I was watching MSNBC and CNN -- but it felt like ESPN. I watched as they started talking about how Michelle would be a different dressing First Lady. That was actually a point of conversation! How about: Is Obama's energy policy on point? Is McCain backing a new Cold War? Is there a chance McCain's cancer will reoccur? These are the kinds of questions I want to see discussed -- not how Michelle Obama's wardrobe will differ from previous First Ladies. And how about discussing how McCain twisted a Jay Leno joke about how he owns 7 houses into a diatribe about being forced to live in a box for five years? With all due respect to him, one has nothing to do with the other. Maybe McCain is losing it. When my father was 72 he started to forget things. I still loved and respected him -- but that doesn't mean I wanted him to be president. WASHINGTON -- When Alexi Giannoulias was an undergraduate at the University of Chicago in the mid-1990s, one of the guys he would play pick-up basketball games with in Hyde Park was Barack Obama, who taught at the U. of C. law school. Now Giannoulias is the Illinois state treasurer and Obama is the presumptive Democratic nominee. Obama has been "like a mentor to me," Giannoulias told me. He will be one of the parade of Chicagoans who will speak at the Democratic convention Monday night, when Obama's family and friends tell the story of Obama's life. Michelle Obama is Monday's prime time speaker, and she will be introduced by her brother, Craig Robinson, who grew up with her on Chicago's South Side. "I want people throughout the country to know the Barack Obama I know," said Giannoulias. Giannoulias --who won a tough primary with Obama's endorsement -- is a surrogate -- stumping in half dozen states; a major fund-raiser, on Obama's National Finance Committee, which means collecting at least $250,000 and a primary day basketball buddy. Also on the bill: Comptroller Dan Hynes, whom Obama beat in the 2004 Senate primary, only to go on and lead the call for him to run for president; Attorney General Lisa Madigan; Chicago City Clerk Miguel del Valle and two men who can talk about Obama's days as a community organizer on the Southeast Side of Chicago, Jerry Kellman and SEIU Local 1 President Tom Balanoff. Obama campaign manager David Plouffe on Saturday tapped close Obama friend Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-Ill.) to negotiate debate details with the McCain team and the Commission on Presidential Debates. The bi-partisan commission has had debates on the drawing board for quite some time. While there is nothing to preclude the campaigns from having more, sponsored by others, Plouffe in his letter said that was unlikely. Emanuel, said Plouffe, will "review the specifics of the Commission's proposal, discuss any requested changes to that proposal, and resolve any issues left open by the Commission's framework. .....Due to the late date of the two parties' nominating conventions, and the relatively short period between the end of the conventions and the first proposed debate, it is likely that the four Commission debates will be the sole series of debates in the fall campaign." The debates are Sept. 26 at the University of Mississippi at Oxford; Oct. 7 at Belmont University at Nashville and Oct. 15 at Hofstra University at Hempstead, N.Y. There is a vice presidential debate Oct. 2 at Washington University in St. Louis. From the Obama campaign.... by Amanda Erickson If you're paying attention to Congress, you've probably heard they passed a bill that tries to make college more affordable for students. What has received less attention is a provision that will make everyone's life a little easier. Thanks to this legislation, the federal form students and parents fill out to receive college financial aid will be shortened and translated out of government-speak, so parents and students can spend less time crunching the numbers. by John McCormick Sen. Barack Obama's campaign released a letter today to the Commission on Presidential Debates that accepts their framework for three presidential debates and one vice presidential debate.
