Filed under: Analysis / Opinion , Events , Odds and ends , Blizzard , Quests , Expansions As a few of our readers have noticed, Blizzard has fixed the old problems with the Harvest Festival this year -- the new races of Blood Elves and Draenei can now do the quests that start outside of Orgrimmar and Ironforge. Last year was the first time the races had a chance to run them, and Blizzard hadn't implemented the quests for them yet. But this year, things are A-OK. Unfortunately, there's no acknowledgement that they're new to the game -- while the quests do mention the character's class, they just see BEs and Draenei as just other members of their faction. It was a little weird running to honor Grom Hellscream with my Blood Elf, but if you want to be a good member of the Horde or Alliance (and pick up that nice food dispenser in the mail), have at it. Dear Santa’s Little Helper; Thank you for putting down the tinsel long enough to read this letter. I’ll be as brief as a snowflake in Florida. The other day -- a few days before the first official day of Autumn -- I was buying sunscreen at the store, and had to move a case of candy canes in order to reach the SPF 50. It occurred to me, not for the first time, that perhaps the major retail outlets are putting out your Christmas merchandise just a wee bit early. Don’t get me wrong. I like the holidays as much as the next gal, but I like to think I’m an equal opportunity reveler, enjoying all of the other holidays that come in between New Year’s and Christmas. And since we’re not planning on dressing as Elves for Halloween, or having gingerbread stuffing with our Thanksgiving turkey, perhaps you were a bit premature when you put up that whole Christmas tree ornament department next to Macy’s lingerie section before the Autumnal Equinox. Is it really necessary to begin the retail Christmas frenzy so early? Most standard Advent calendars usually allow the countdown 24 days out -- not 107. I realize stores must capitalize on the sales frenzy that can accompany the Christmas season, but I dare say that not too many consumers I know are in the market for their snowflake table linens and cans of spray snow this much before Columbus Day. It’s not that I don’t appreciate a sense of readiness. It’s just that when I see partridges in pear trees tha ...

It's the small things that sometimes get you. Today's strip, for example? My favorite part is that the elven character is wearing plaid on the cover of the "70-Foot Hobbit". It's a tiny little detail that probably only cracked me up. The Eagle & The Child, by the way, is a real pub. My wife and I shared many a bitter in there, in the back corner where JRR Tolkien, CS Lewis and others used to hold their "Inklings" meetings. For a nerd like me, it was nirvana. Also, the bitter was good. If you're ever in Oxford...do swing by The... ...
