Despite a style that seems lifted from the genteel pages of Southern Living magazine, Republican Sen. Elizabeth Dole has always displayed an intense drive to succeed in public life. It is a drive that separated her from many women of her pre-feminist generation. It led her to build a deep and impressive Washington resume. Now, locked in a tough re-election campaign, Dole is reminding voters that she is more than “Little Miss Perfect,” which New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd once called her. “I've had to break a few (glass ceilings) as I came along,” Dole said at a GOP rally in High Point last week. These are trying times for Dole, who is facing an unexpectedly stiff challenge from Democratic state Sen. Kay Hagan of Greensboro. With change, rather than Washington experience, the mantra of this election, Dole is increasingly reminding voters that she once personified change. Dole, 72, grew up in an era with different expectations for women. The daughter of a prosperous Salisbury wholesale florist, Elizabeth Hanford Dole was May Queen (and student government president) at Duke University and made her debut at the Raleigh debutante ball. Though her only North Carolina residence is her late parents' handsome Tudor-style house, her North Carolina accent remains undiluted by her Potomac years. Her style is still very much 1950s North Carolina. She's always smartly dressed and displays a get-more-bees-with-honey style of graciousness ... Source: www.indyweek.com --- 25 days ago

Elizabeth Dole is losing badly in her race for reelection in North Carolina and she's now trying to smear her opponent by associating her with evil atheists. See the flyer her campaign put out here . She calls atheists "the most vile, radical liberals in America." The flyer even cited directly a friend of Dispatches, Daylight Atheism . Jesse Helms would be so proud of Liddy. Oh dear, curse me. I have neglected this place lately. Oh well. Here we go with this week’s star cactus. This time it’s a politician - Elizabeth Dole, the woman responsible for attacking her political opponent, Kay Hagan, for simply consorting with atheists. Elizabeth Dole has been one of the outstanding Republican Senators since she first came to the Senate in 2003. She is a dedicated public servant, who has made the words "public service" a badge of honor. I have been proud to serve with Elizabeth and even prouder to watch the performance and work ethic of this strong Conservative Senator. I became Majority Leader the year Elizabeth came to the Senate to represent the people of North Carolina. I quickly learned that I could count on Senator Dole to support conservative Republican legislation as I brought it to the floor. I also quickly learned that Elizabeth was always willing to fight for the people of North Carolina and the conservative principles that she so firmly believes in. When I think about the accomplishments of Senator Dole, I am especially impressed that she has been involved in selfless public service for the past fifty years. Her uncompromising commitment to conservative causes and to her country should be an example for all Americans. Just consider her path of public service: an activist for consumers, champion for safety improvements, advocate for women in the workplace, provider of relief and compassion to victims of disaster. Elizabeth has served five Presidents, one Democrat and four Republicans. She was the first female Secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation. She was also Secretary of Labor, President of the American Red Cross and a member of Ro ... Source: www.topix.com --- 9 days ago

The other day an obvious question popped into my head. Where's Elizabeth Dole? Yes, I know she has lived outside North Carolina for the last half-century, but where are her visits? Yes, I know she almost never visited the state over the last six years, instead sending staff members to "her" events. But, this is an election year. Ole' Liddy Dole has to be out there shaking hands, kissing babies, chatting up farmers, rallying the base. Right? The answer appears to be, No. We know that Elizabeth Dole couldn't attend the Republican National Convention because she was so busy. So, I wondered just what she was so busy doing. I went to her campaign web page and there isn't even a list of events . Is that unusual. Yes . It . Is . After Googling and searching various newspaper archives, these are the events I come up with for Elizabeth Dole this campaign: August 19th - AgFIRST! forum on food safety sponsored by the N.C. Department of Agriculture August 30thish - Advanced Direct, a small Greensboro direct-mail firm That appears to be it. I'm not saying she didn't do more events, but if she did they don't appear in the Char-O, N&O, Google, News-Record, Google News, or her website. They also don't appear on her official webpage, where her last official visit to North Carolina was at the dedication of Clinton High School on August 14thish. So, where in the world is Liddy Dole? Is she having any public events? Is she being interviewed by real repor ... Source: www.itif.org --- 30 days ago
