Congratulations to Doc Nicelli - one of the legends of city travel team basketball. His Student-Athlete Broncos - a team basically made up of Brooklyn kids - is in the Elite Eight of the the powerful adidas Super 64 17-and-under tournament in Vegas. Norron McDonald of Banneker scored 14 as the Broncos defeated the Arizona Warriors, 66-62, in last night’s Sweet 16. The Broncos - who also feature Akeem Johnson of Susan McKinney and Eask Pitt of Out Savior New American - is the only local team left. They will face Net Game Sports from Minnesota this morning. Many of the big names - the Atlanta Celtics, Grassroots Canada and Pump and Run Elite - are also still around. We followed New Heights 16’s - one of our favorite teams - most of the week there and are proud to announce Kimani Young, Adam Berkowitz and Jeff Rivera’s team is still alive in the Elite Eight at the adidas Super 64 tournament in Vegas. Forward Devon Collier from St. Anthony’s scored 14 points as New Heights defeated a towering Gateway Basketball Club team from St. Louis, 73-53 in the Sweet 16. Earlier in the day, forward Jayvaughn Pinkston of Loughlin - who has just blown up in this tournament - had 28 as New Heights got by the Derek Smith All Stars, 89-82, in the round of 32. New Heights will play 43 Hoops from Minnesota this morning. The Playaz - who set the bar for all travel teams in our area - have also advanced to the quarterfinals in the 16s after their Red tea ...

Last year the Hanover American Legion baseball team knocked on the door to get to the State Finals, but could not get in. This year, Hanover made sure that they made the State Finals by ripping the door off the hinges. The Post 149 run through the playoffs has been impressive with three best of three two games sweeps. Hanover rolled past Wareham in the Zone 10 playoffs as well as Zone 6 East teams, Milton and Braintree in the South Sectional Tournament playoffs to earn its first trip to the state finals under coach Dan Lambert in Chicopee. The two wins over Braintree, 11-3 and 16-0 in seven innings, because of the 10-run rule clinched the trip to Chicopee for Hanover. The double-elimination state legion tournament began on Tuesday with Hanover facing Newburyport in the Eight-team double-elimination tournament. Newburyport came into the state finals with a 19-1 record after winning its Zone 4 championship and playoff series in the North. "We are going to go out and try to win some games," Lambert. "Everything is starting to come together. It took a while, but it is probably the best time for everything to come together." Hanover has had good pitching and a powerful offensive ball club through out the season and their defense has been coming on according to the coach in the playoffs. They have also been determined to get to the state finals. "The players have kept their focus," said Lambert. "No one is looking ahead. They know wha ...

It goes without saying that in a state tournament, a team should expect to face the top tier of competition. For the majority of the teams headed to this year's American Legion Elite Eight, there is little else to anticipate. Of the Eight teams in the bracket, only two hail from the same zone - East Longmeadow and host Chicopee, both from Zone 2-3. For example, Milford Post 59 opens the tournament today at Szot Park in Chicopee (4:30 p.m.) against a Lowell squad it knows very little about. Milford didn't get its first look at Post 87 until Lowell played Sudbury in this past weekend's state sectional final, and hasn't seen Lowell's ace starting pitcher, Justin Dietz. Since Post 59 knows so little about its opponent, Milford manager Rich Piergustavo is asking his players to simply play their game. It was pitching, defense and timely hitting that led Milford to a 26-2 record and its second consecutive appearance in the Elite Eight, and Post 59 will need to continue to excel at each as it tries for a 10th state championship in program history. "I think we have to take the focus off what they're trying to do and put it on what we're trying to do," Piergustavo said. It all starts with pitching, and Milford has its No. 1, lefty Matt White, ready to go against Dietz. White is very well rested coming into the game. He has been off since allowing no runs in Eight innings on Saturday, July 26 in the state sectional first-round series against ...

It's now down to the final Eight. You read it, the final Eight quarter-final spots of the 2008 Wimbledon Championships were finally determined and both Federer and Nadal, the two heavy favorites to win the Wimbledon title, got through. Rafael Nadal earned his ticket to the final Eight after dominating Mikhail Youzhny, 6-3 6-3 6-1, avenging the worst defeat of his career when he suffered an astonishing 6-0 6-1 upset. Nadal is on his way to a possible third straight final appearance in the 2008 All England Lawn Tennis Championships and after quickly dispatching Youzhny in two hours and 10 minutes to advance to the quarter-finals, we can't see any reason to think otherwise. The 17th seeded Youzhny traded blows with the 2008 French Open champion from the baseline but Nadal overpowered the Russian with some typically ferocious shots. I guess you can say Nadal thought he was back at Roland Garros playing on a clay surface eh? Hmm... I wonder if Roger Federer was around watching his fiercest rival's brilliance? Speaking of, the world No.1 also earned a ticket to the 2008 Wimbledon quarter-finals after an also dominant win over former world No.1 Lleyton Hewitt. Although... ...
