Congratulations to Doc Nicelli - one of the legends of city travel team basketball. His Student-Athlete Broncos - a team basically made up of Brooklyn kids - is in the Elite Eight of the the powerful adidas Super 64 17-and-under tournament in Vegas. Norron McDonald of Banneker scored 14 as the Broncos defeated the Arizona Warriors, 66-62, in last night’s Sweet 16. The Broncos - who also feature Akeem Johnson of Susan McKinney and Eask Pitt of Out Savior New American - is the only local team left. They will face Net Game Sports from Minnesota this morning. Forward Devon Collier from St. Anthony’s scored 14 points as New Heights defeated a towering Gateway Basketball Club team from St. Louis, 73-53 in the Sweet 16. Earlier in the day, forward Jayvaughn Pinkston of Loughlin - who has just blown up in this tournament - had 28 as New Heights got by the Derek Smith All Stars, 89-82, in the round of 32. New Heights will play 43 Hoops from Minnesota this morning. The Playaz - who set the bar for all travel teams in our area - have also advanced to the quarterfinals in the 16s after their Red tea ...
