Humans pride themselves on what they think is a unique ability to consciously produce sophisticated art, music and literature . But chimps and elephants paint images, and this video from Japan is claimed to be the first showing a baby Elephant being "taught" to paint by its parents. Shot at the Ichihara Elephant Kingdom near Tokyo, it shows one-year-old Yumeka adding the finishing touches to what appears to be a flower. The zoo manager says that although many elephants have been taught to paint by humans, Yumeka began to show talent for painting without training. But the big question remains: are the elephants consciously attempting to reproduce a remembered image of an object, or just prodding a paintbrush randomly onto a canvas to receive a reward, in this case a shower? Elephants certainly show a range of intelligent behaviour and even emotions. Along with gorillas, chimpanzees and other great apes, for example, elephants appear to have "theory of mind" , the knowledge that other creatures are sentient and capable of thinking for themselves. They even appear to grieve for the dead , showing a greater interest in Elephant skulls, for example, than in skulls of other animals. Since they recognise their own reflection in a mirror, they have self-awareness. But do they have enough savvy, memory of objects and coordination to consciously paint pre-selected pictures? It strikes me as just slightly odd that Post reporter Theola Labbé-DeBose, like Michelle Obama a Princeton grad, could write an entire mini-essay on "Michelle, meritocracy and me" - about the special difficulties faced by black Americans trying navigate the overclass, and her worry that "no amount of pedigree and personal polish will let us entirely escape suspicion, mistrust and jealousy" - without even mentioning affirmative action, let alone pondering its impact on the elite African-American experience. "I've given a lot of thought to the intersection of race, education and meritocracy," she writes, "based on both my personal experience and my job covering schools for The Post." Half of the now defunct Chicago act Skies We Built have formed a new band called Elephant March . A song from the new group is available to download via MySpace , expect it to appear on an EP that's in the works now. Darrell Qualls, formerly of the southern metal group Payback, has joined Alabama based Straight Jacket 4 Nixon . The band will head into the studio in September to record a new record for Trifekta Records. A few of the band's demos are online now at MySpace . Old Shoe Records artist Longway , who was voted "best punk band in Orange County" at the Orange County Music Awards, will play the remaining dates of this year's Warped Tour. The band was picked by Kevin Lyman to be the BBQ band on this year's tour.
