Pacific Gas and Electric Company today celebrated the 25,000th net metered solar interconnection in its northern and central California service area, representing almost half of the nation’s customer-owned solar. Net energy metering allows eligible renewable customers to offset the cost of their Electric usage with energy they export to the power grid. The 25,000th PG&E net metered solar customer, David Bower, is also part of the California Solar Initiative (CSI) program. To encourage customer investment in solar, PG&E provides rebate incentives that will total $4,500 for a system that supplies 2.4 kilowatts (kW) of power to Bower’s home. ...

Some quick numbers on the stock market’s momentous rebound today, which ended an eight-day losing streak that had dragged stocks to five-year lows: --- The Dow Jones industrial average’s 936.42-point, 11.1% gain, to 9,387.61, recouped almost exactly 50% of what the index lost last week (1,874 points). --- The Standard & Poor’s 500, up 11.6% today, recouped 52.1% of what it lost last week. The Nasdaq composite, up 11.8%, regained 65.4% of last week’s drop. --- The Dow still is down 2,001 points, or 17.6%, from its close of 11,388 on Sept. 19 -- which was just before the market fell off the cliff on worsening fears about the financial system. --- We’re still deep in a bear market: Measured from its all-time high of 14,164.53 a year ago, the Dow is down 33.7%. Your four year old may never have heard the word "caulk," or be able to spell "insulate," but that doesn't mean she can't build a house. At least that what's Electric Company Oncor is advocating. The Company will host an all-day event in the State Fair's Coliseum this Monday that targets kids ages four to seven. Specialists from the Company's statewide "Take a Load Off" campaign will be on hand to teach children how to install energy conscious weather stripping and insulation. What? I don't even really know what weather stripping is and I'm several decades older. The kids do get a construction hat and some crayons. So maybe when they're old enough to understand "greenhouse gases," they'll already have built an energy-efficient house. ...

Solaris has been Sun Microsystems's bread-and-butter Unix system since 1992. While Unix platforms such as Solaris now are up against the open source Linux juggernaut, Sun maintains it has the technological advantages and accommodations for open source to keep Solaris in the game. The Company also cites important customer wins as evidence of the platform's continued strength. To hash out the state of Solaris in today's marketplace, InfoWorld editor at large Paul Krill recently met with Jim McHugh, vice president of Solaris marketing at Sun, at the Company's Menlo Park, Calif., campus. InfoWorld: Solaris has major users such as Joyent and General Electric. But it does seem like Linux has the momentum, not just when compared with Solaris, but compared with Unix overall. Recent shipment figures I received from IDC show Linux growing and Solaris slipping, with the Solaris volumes being reduced between 2006 and 2007. Does Sun have any new efforts planned to promote Solaris as an alternative to Linux or as a complement to Linux? [ Many Linux advocates that Solaris is on its deathbed . Find out why in InfoWorld's analysis. ] Jim McHugh: I actually think that what we're hearing is Linux has made some momentum and there was some movement toward Linux, but actually we're seeing now a lot of movement back from Linux to Solaris. So basically, you could find an example anywhere that would lay out -- OK, if I moved off this old machine, running ...

How was I supposed to know that my sister and I have different addresses? We live in the same complex. I assumed only our apartment numbers would be different. I've spent a frustrating several days trying to get the power turned on in my new apartment. Every time I spoke to someone at the Electric Company they would tell me the same thing: they had no record of the power being shut off. We went round and round in circles with no resolution. I've had to paint with little light, even in the daytime there really hasn't been good light to paint by. But I've pressed on because I'm moving tomorrow and need to have at least the living and bedroom done before moving my stuff in. Then I set up an account with the phone Company, and they called back to say my address could not be confirmed. I was beginning to wonder what kind of twilight zone I was moving into. Sissyface moseyed on over as I was speaking to them, and when she heard me confirm (what I thought was) my address, she said, "That's not your address." Mystery solved, just like that. That's the bad news. Well, that plus slamming my hand in a door and winding up with a huge, swollen bruise. The good news is that I love the colors I chose for each room. I can't tell you how many times in the past I've picked out colors I loved only to discover they weren't at all what I wanted. Yesterday I took some before photos, which I'll post tonight if I have time. I don't want anyone thinking I ove ...

Sure, there were plenty of folks ringing the alarm bells years ago, but universal acceptance of the fundamental economic calamity that faces us from every corner of the world, and every person with two cents to rub together, has just now taken hold. I wrote quite some time ago that the turning point in the economy cannot come about until President Bush admits there is a problem and that he will be the last person to do so. While I do not have a high opinion of President Bush, the facts speak for themselves as I wrote one year ago. See Is Bush giving the country away without knowing it? The storm is not over but we are coming to grips with it at very great expense. Admitting our errors is only the start; now we will have to spend years fixing problems and making many compromises. Unfortunately many people may lose their homes, jobs or both before we see significant growth. We have had temporary relief from record high oil prices and commodities prices. However, I would emphasize "temporary" because the developing world will not stop expanding and the quick remedies ...

OLED lighting could be available on a commercial scale within two years if General Electric's recent manufacturing ideas go to plan. Anil Duggan, head of GE's OLED research team, says the panels the Company is creating using a printer could be ready for the market by 2010, though he agrees this is "very aggressive". "We're trying to be as low-tech as possible," he added, highlighting one of the major problems of OLED manufacture. Roll to roll GE is currently working with roll-to-roll OLED printing, literally running the organic lighting material through a printing press in the same manner as a newspaper, a process which could lead to OLED lighting at around 60p per square foot. However, sizes are currently limited to 8in panels, but GE will be building a machine over the next year that can run to much larger sizes. "It's not going to be competitive with fluorescents in 2010," Duggal said, which added to the initial high cost of manufacture means the technology will be limited to high-end architectural areas. But economies of scale will drive that down, as will improved techniques learned from display manufacture, where OLED is set to compete with LCD and plasma in the TV and monitor stakes. "In the 1950s, people were talking about electroluminescence the way we talk about OLEDs today," Duggal said. "It's humbling." ...
