There is major sadness around Waterford at the loss of a local man, Martin Cullen, from the Cabinet table. While in the past year he may have been appearing less at public events due to his back and health problems, he did manage to hold his position in Cabinet and keep an eye on Waterford and the South east’E best interest. His loss will be of strong concerna for an area that has suffered so hard in this recession. We have lost many industries in the past few years and the construction sector is on its knees although there is some consolation in that we have the infrastructure for the future. Having Minister Cullen in the Cabinet secured many advantages for Waterford and the region. The new bridge/bypass will stand as one of his achievements. This was a long campaign, going back to the City Manager, Michael Doody, who sought a high level bridge only to be rebuffed by various Environment Ministers. Now we have it and the soon to be opened motorway to Dublin will be another great advance for the city. The Waterford- Knocktopher motorway section will be opened the Monday after St Patrick’s Day, this will shorten journey times to Dublin. When we look back at the Celtic Tiger era at least we can point to these advances, along with the excellent Waterford Ring Road. The Airport has also made a number of advances so, as a city, Waterford has many positives as we grapple with a very deep recession. Martin Cullen fought hard and was not afr ... Its interesting looking at your average campaigner-type’s priorities for a General Election and comparing them to the issues that “normal” people worry about. By “campaigner-type”, I suspect I’m being biased towards those campaigning on global issues, but its a big area of difference between the issues political parties are dealing with and the campaigns some [...] ... BAGHDAD: Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki edged ahead Sunday in a tight race in the country''s parliamentary elections after partial results from all of Iraq''s 18 provinces showed his bloc leading in seven - two more than his chief rival. The early tally strengthens al-Maliki''s chances of retaining the prime minister''s post, although he is unlikely to win a majority necessary to govern alone. Instead, the narrow race could lead to months of political wrangling as leaders try to cobble together a coalition government that will rule as American forces leave Iraq in 2011. The March 7 vote was Iraq''s second for a full-term government since the US-led invasion in 2003. According to the partial count from all of Iraq''s 18 provinces released by the country''s electoral commission, al-Maliki''s State of Law coalition leads in seven provinces. His closest challenger, the secular Iraqiya bloc led former Prime Minister Ayad Allawi, leads in five provinces, while the religious Shiite Iraqi National Alliance and the main Kurdish coalition each lead in three. The results were based on partial vote counts released over the past three days, with the percentage of polling stations counted in each province ranging from 10 to 67 percent. In his first public appearance since minor surgery Wednesday, a confident looking al-Maliki praised Iraqis Sunday for defying those who used violence to try to keep them from the polls, saying "the Iraqi people can ... |
