We have had a varied couple of weeks, so I decided to turn on the camera, even though I am in Eldora, Colorado, up in the mountains. First up, the Open Web Foundation . I discuss the new foundation and what it is trying to accomplish (not another standards org!). Then we stay on the topic of the Open Web and browsers, and how Vladimir Vukićević has an promising implementation of Canvas in IE . excanvas has done this for awhile by first emulating VML, and more recently with a Silverlight bridge. Vladimir is a Mozilla hacker, and he managed to shoehorn the Firefox Canvas code in via an <object>. We have worked out how to license our code, but what about the other stuff that a project has? What about the documentation, the samples, the protocols? The Google Code team now allows you to choose a content license to cover those bases. Just a simple drop down away in your project hosting area. Elsewhere, in Google Code land, the code review tool that we talked about early has now made its way to Google Code. Now you can say "Looks Good To Me" to your buddies source code as he puts in a new commit on your new opensource project. A solid field of pro women line up for the Dale's Pale Ale short track race. Erin Huck of Tokyo Joe's was on the gas to win the pro womens short track. Jen G rolls it under the Challenge chair in the short track. The pro men start their drag race in the short track. Mike West of Maverick returns for his first comeback race after breaking his ankle at the start of the season. Jen G stomps her way to another 4th place in the cross country race, which was dubbed by most racers as one of the funnest courses of the year. Joshua Bezecny of Tre/VW leads the pro men up the first climb of the race while a zealous spectator taunts them with his backside. Good news : Officials drop fight to block bicyclists from roads -- Des Moines Register, Aug. 28, 2008 "The supervisors will meet in Eldora on Tuesday to consider repealing the ordinance, said Hardin County Supervisor Jim Johnson. He acknowledged the ordinance has been unpopular with bicycle riders , but he said county officials were concerned about protecting county taxpayers." Aug. 27, 2008 -- Supervisors of Iowa's Hardin County have passed an ordinance [see below] requiring that any bicycle ride of 10 or more people carry at least $1 million of liability insurance. To Steamboat Springs. I've now been to all the ski resorts less than 4 hours away. The closest is 45 minutes: Eldora, and is ONLY open for skiing. And there is no lodging. The furthest is Steamboat Springs, where I stayed Saturday night. Actually, I took a wrong turn to Estes Park, and by the time I decided I had no choice but to turn around, I was halfway to Steamboat. At any rate, I heartily recommend this place well above and beyond Vail, or Aspen. Breckenridge is a close second, but gets all sorts of crowds because its close to Denver. Here is KEY: If you drive, Mapquest will divert you around Rocky Mountain National Park's Hwy 34, "The Trail Ridge Road" which is closed Sept-May, and sometimes even other times if it happens to Snow in July. HOWEVER, this is a STUNNING and SPECTACULAR route. It climbs above 12,000 ft, above the tree line, and runs along the top of a ridge (or mountain). There's a fabulous gift store on top. The short of it is, I felt pretty good....but not as good as Sol Vista a few weeks ago. I had a good start and rode in the top 5 for the first 2 laps as a early opening lap crash split the field. I got through the crash and was able to catch up to the leaders. I rode with the leaders until they dropped me on the back side climb on lap 2. This climb took its toll on my legs. Being covered in rocks...the was nothing easy about it. On the 3rd lap I burped the front tire on a downhill containing some small rooty drop off. Just enough air came out (about 3-5 PSI) to have me nursing the front tire the remainder of the 3rd and final lap. On the later half of lap 3 and all of lap 4 I was caught by a few guys as I had to chill out pointing the bike down hill....as to try not to roll the tire off or dent the hell out of the rim. Even at Infineon, a road course where his star has shone brightly before, he was not much of a factor in the day's events. When you have someone who no less an authority than Tony Stewart has described as the best all-around driver out there (remember how earlier this he ran a solid second at Eldora in his first-ever dirt track race?) nearly invisible, something's gone wrong.
