On our last full day in England we still had a few places that required visiting. Top of the list was the Natural History Museum, which I had intended originally to see during the first time we were in London, but got squeezed back to later. But it didn't really matter, as we made our way to South Kensington. However, before we got to the Museum, we made a short detour to check out Harrods. I guess a department store has got it pretty well made when there are signs at the near Tube station directing you to it. Then again I guess Harrods is a little different to most places, as we found out when a guy in a green coat nicely opened the front door for us (wow that must be a pretty boring job!) The interior was pretty amazing, with the Egyptian staircase particularly noteworthy. The pet corner was interesting, yet rather disturbing as I went from wondering why there was a diverse range of children's clothing in the pet shop, to realising it wasn't actually children's clothes and wishing that I hadn't clicked. I guess people who typically shop at Harrods are the type retarded enough to buy a little jacket for their pooch. Nevertheless, I did actually end up buying something myself, although it was just the new Coldplay CD (which I couldn't actually listen to until we got home as we didn't have a CD player on us) that had only just come out that day. Anyhow, after our Harrods detour we made it to the Natural History Museum. The dinosaur skel ... Source: www.miamiherald.com --- 9 days ago

The Women and Gender in Ancient Egypt website is an online version of an exhibition at the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology at the University of Michigan, between March 14 and June 15, 1997. The exhibition was curated by Terry G. Wilfong, associate professor of Egyptology at the Department of Near Eastern Studies at the University of Michigan and consists of artefacts from the collections of the Kelsey Museum and the University of Michigan Library. It examines the lives and roles of women in ancient Egyptian society. It appears that women had higher status and were able to hold higher offices in ancient Egypt than what was possible in later Greek and Roman times. Although there are examples of women ruling as kings, the society was still a male dominated society. The site consists of a number of pages or chapters that covers certain areas such as; gender and religion; gender and power; other genders; and gender, fertility and sexuality. Each page consists of a short text and links to images of a number of artefacts relevant for the topic. This resource is easy to navigate and is useful for any student of Egyptology and especially those interested in gender studies. ...

Milton Bloch ran the Mint Museum of Art for more than 14 years. By the time he left in 1990 to become president of the Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute in Utica, N.Y., the Mint had risen from a quiet Museum to a strong, vibrant institution. Among Bloch's most notable achievements included the expansion of the Museum in Eastover, bringing in the blockbuster Egyptian show “Ramesses the Great” in the 1980s and lively exhibits on Romare Bearden and Larry Rivers. Staff writer Jennifer Rothacker spoke with Bloch, 71. Here are excerpts from that interview. Q. Are you still with the Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute? I'm retiring at the end of the year. I've been director of four museums and now this Institute for a continuous span of 41 years. I'll be 72 when I leave at the end of the year. That's probably sufficient reason to retire. Q. What are your retirement plans? My plan had been to retire in Charlotte, we even bought a house in Dilworth. We have dual citizenship in Charlotte and Utica. We have a daughter in Charlotte and have always maintained our friendships there. But (since buying the Dilworth house), my wife was offered and accepted a job as vice president for enrollment for the College of Wooster in Ohio. I'm going to join her for a few years until we retire in a few years in Charlotte. I'll write, publish, do consulting for museums. I do (consulting) now, but for the most part, I do it without charge as a kind of p ...
