The latest Asus Eee PC models have hit shelves in the UK. The new 10in Eee PC 1000(H) and 1000 retail for £349 and £369 respectively. The new models incorporate Intel's Atom processor and offer Bluetooth and 802.11n Wi-Fi connectivity. Both are housed in a larger chassis than their predecessors, catering for the bigger 10in screen and a slightly larger keyboard. We've had the odd complaint about poor battery life from Celeron M based Eee PCs, especially since our Eee PC 701 and Eee PC 900 review units lasted a very reasonable 2 hours 15 mins and 2 hours 49 min when reading a PDF with screen brightness set to maximum and Wifi turned off. A recent Bios update disabled a Bios option that let you choose between performance and battery life so that the CPU would flick between 900MHz and 630MHz respectively when on battery power. But the update seems like a bit of a red herring since it didn't improve battery life substantially on my Eee PC (a different one to the one we reviewed). A bigger issue is the quality of the battery being used, since each Eee battery appears to behave different and every one I've seen isn't calibrated properly. With the battery fully charged, my Eee PC 900 reports 80 per cent battery life remaining as soon as it is unplugged. It then drains down to 7 per cent over the course of one hour, where it stays for a second hour before dying. Unfortunately, the default Windows power scheme puts the Eee PC into standby at 10 per cent, so many Eee PC owners aren't getting the full potential out of their batteries. A friend's Eee PC 701 I had a play with exhibited similar behaviour, getting stuck on 30 per cent. The cause is probably cheap logic inside the batteries being supplied with the Celeron M generation of Eee PCs and my advice is to either turn off the Windows power scheme al ... Filed under: Laptops ASUS must think that best way to make the Eee PC stand out in the overflowing netbook market is to crank out minor, uninteresting variants of the same models, because otherwise we're at a total loss to explain today's appearance of the Eee PC 1000HD. Yeah, that's the 1000 HD , not the 1000H , which we've already seen. Ridiculous. Even more ridiculous is that it's basically the same machine as the Pentium M-based Eee 904 , only with the 1000's 10-inch screen. Right. So now not only are there an endless variety of Eee models, the model numbers themselves don't indicate anything logical: the Eee 901 is faster than the 904, which uses the basic case of the 1000 but shares a processor with the 900 and 1000HD -- but not the 1000 or 1000H, which are Atom-based like the 901. Working on the principle that there can never be too many touchscreen Eee variants, jkkmobile has a new tutorial for adding such a panel to the ASUS Eee PC 901 . The 8.9-inch touchscreen panel itself costs around $70 on eBay (plus shipping); then it’s just a case of opening up the 901, locating power and USB connections, and carefully squeezing everything in. Check out the demo video of the touchscreen Eee 901 after the cut Rather than disconnect the webcam or add an internal USB hub, as previous methods have demanded, jkkmobile used the second set of SSD PCI-E USB pins. The drive continues to work, obviously. Power is sourced from the connections near the webcam connector. As for the end result? Our good friend David Flynn over at APCMag got himself a bit of a scoop chatting with Mark Whittard from Toshiba - apparently they're seriously planning to launch an Eee PC killer in the near future. Although there's very little info about the device at all, Mark did say that it would most likely feature a nine-inch screen, feature a (relatively) large SSD drive, run on an Atom processor and run Windows rather than Linux. Interestingly, Mark used the apparently used the term ULPC to describe the device, with the "L" standing for "low-cost" rather than "light". Which should be the perfect way to confuse customers even more than they already are. He also mentioned that they're goal in entering the space was to "produce a premium ULPC or mini-note at a slightly higher price by adding "a few hundred dollars" to the sticker". As good as it is to have another player enter the low-cost laptop market, openly stating that you're trying to drive up the cost isn't going to win you too many friends with consumers looking for a super-cheap lappy. After all, they've already got the Eee, the MSI wind and the Acer Aspire Blue... Why pay $800 when you can get away with $500? [ APCMag ] ...
