Here's a look at fact checks of some claims by Barack Obama and John McCain: Claims in a Barack Obama ad that John McCain voted to cut Education Funding and proposed abolishing the Education Department were deemed barely true by Politifact. Obama, in an ad, called for fast-tracking "a plan for energy 'made-in-America' that will free us from our dependence on Mideast oil in 10 years." CNN ruled this statement possible. In a CNN interview, McCain said Obama "has voted in the Senate raising taxes on people that make as low as $42,000 a year." The Washington Post saw some shading of the facts. John McCain said "Obama has asked for $932 million in earmarks, literally $1 million for every day that he's been in Congress." Politifact found that to be mostly true . ...

DAYTON, OH – Barack Obama released a new Education proposal today that campaign officials estimate will cost $1B a year. Arguing that a strong Education policy was essential to America’s ability to compete in a global economy, Obama said John McCain had been in Washington for nearly 30 years but had done little to strengthen America's schools. “In those three decades, he has not done one thing to truly improve the quality of public Education in our country, not one real proposal or law or initiative, nothing,” he said. “After three decades of indifference on Education, do you really believe that John McCain is going to suddenly make a difference now? John McCain doesn’t get it. He doesn’t understand that our success as a nation depends on our success in Education and our success in public Education. That’s something I do understand.” ...

The following is a brief of the story. For the full story, see Wednesday's print edition of the Boonville Daily News. BOONVILLE – One year ago, Boonslick Technical Education Center Director Paul Wootten received a call that was almost too good to be true. As staff members were working on ideas that would help jumpstart declining enrollment numbers, representatives of Missouri’s Department of Elementary and Secondary Education called to ask if the center was interested in being a charter member of a new nationwide consortium called Technology Centers That Work (TCTW).  Needless to say, when Wootten discovered that the offer came with more than $100,000 in Funding, he quickly accepted. Since that time staff members have used the additional Funding to work toward upgrading course offerings, integrating math and language arts skills into their programs and exploring ways to make career Education more appealing to students. While the process of implementing TCTW takes five years, visible results have already been achieved. Most notably, BTEC was one of just seven schools nationwide that earned the Technical Centers That Work Gold Readiness Award. This award recognizes schools whose students scored highest on assessments given in the spring. Boonslick was the only Missouri school achieving this recognition. ...
