A really interesting article in this issue of the FIRES journal. This is an FA battalion formed from a core battery out of Vicenza that moved to Bamberg, Germany. There they organized to deploy to Iraq and perform non-standard missions (i.e. infantry and M.P. missions). Days before deployment, the mission was switched to A-stan, they picked up their "fires" mission again, and they were required to add/certify on M198 155mm howitzers in addition to their 105mm systems. On arrival, they were expected to provide six decentralized two-gun platoons across the brigade front while also providing an infantry platoon reaction force and self-defense of their positions. Two platoons were required to repel boarders with direct fire defense of their positions while deployed. Fascinating story. Most fires were conducted beyond reach of 105mm. High angle at 20kms. Huge range P/E at that distance, dramatically affecting accuracy of fires. Something I didn't understand is calibrating mfg. lots of shells and propellant by direct-fire into adjoining "uninhabited" hillsides. I welcome any speculation there- _Field Artillery in the Mountains of Afghanistan_ (http://sill-www.army.mil/firesbulletin/2008/Jul_Sep_2008/Jul_Sep_2008_pages_34_36.pdf) ...
