ESA’s formation-flying quartet of satellites, Cluster, has discovered that Earth’s Atmosphere is constantly leaking Oxygen into Space. Charged oxygen ions, flowing outwards from the polar regions into space. The data collected by Cluster from 2001 to 2003 is used to find the phenomenon. Compared to the Earth’s stock of the life-supporting gas, the amount escaping [...] ...

Oxygen is constantly being evacuated out of Earth’s Atmosphere and into space. Thankfully, at the moment, we have enough oxygen to spare, so there is nothing to worry about. But as a result of the European Space Agency’s Cluster mission, scientists have discovered that sometime in the future, into our Sun’s old age, there might be cause to worry. The physical mechanism ejecting our precious oxygen into space was Cluster’s mission, when it was launched in 2000. After a failed first launch, when the first lot of four satellites was lost in the first test flight of the European Ariane 5 expendable launch system, the ESA waited four years until they could send four new satellites up on Soyuz-Fregat rockets. Flying in a tetrahedral (3-D triangle) formation, the four satellites flew at an altitude anywhere between 30,000 and 64,000 kilometers above the planet. During 2001 and 2003 the satellites were thus able to amass a large amount of information about the mechanism that sends our oxygen into space. What they found was that the electrically charged oxygen atoms, ions, flew outwards from the poles and into space and were being slingshot out into space, gathering speed as they exited. “It is a bit like a sling-shot effect,” said Hans Nilsson, Swedish Institute of Space Physics, who headed the team of space scientists analyzing the data. Cluster found that the slingshot behavior was caused by a change in direction of the magnetic field. Energe ...

By Robert Lockard I recently finished writing an interesting article for the winter 2009 issue of LuxuryRealEstate.com Magazine . The article is on “green” homes, and it was a challenge to write, mainly because I have a number of concerns about the current global-warming scare. I was able to find a lot of good in “green” homes , especially their energy savings and positive health effects on residents. I shied away from discussing their environmental effects, since I am unconvinced that they will have any real ones, and saying that they will might give people a false sense of security. To be sure, I am all for conservation and avoiding the waste or misuse of our resources. But something is very wrong with the current debate, or lack thereof, on global warming . I bring this up, not only because of my magazine article, but also because I read a very informative article entitled “ Hot air over global warming ” by Jerome Delvin in The Seattle Post-Intelligencer this morning. I highly recommend checking it out. As I noted in the Editor’s Note of a July 31, 2008 post to the Luxury Real Estate Blog by Jean-Yves Piton entitled “ Green luxury real estate ,” many climatologists and other scientists are speaking out about the fallacy of manmade global warming . You can find a great deal of accurate information from top scientists who spoke at the 2008 International Conference on Climate Change . It is clear that the Earth’s Atmosphere is warming, ...

There are millions of billions of stars in the observable Universe, yet we only get to see a tiny fraction of them on a clear night sky. The Jules Verne Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) undocked from the International Space Station on Friday at 5:29 p.m. EDT (21:29 UT). The ATV had been docked to the aft port of the Zvezda service module for five months. During that time the Expedition 17 crew members unloaded cargo and stowed trash and discarded items inside the ATV. Jules Verne was the first European Space Agency (ESA) cargo craft to visit the orbiting laboratory. The ATV will orbit the Earth for three more weeks after undocking then re-enter Earth's Atmosphere to burn up over the Pacific Ocean. ESA will conduct an imagery experiment with Jules Verne during its re-entry. The Russian Progress 30 unpiloted cargo craft will launch from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on Wednesday and dock to the station two days later. The Progress 29 (P29) undocked from the Zarya module's Earth-facing port on Sept. 1. P29 will deorbit on Monday, Sept. 8. - NASA Jules Verne Undocks from International Space Station ...
