Living, Reinvented: The Technology of Abundance and Constraints ETech Opens Call for Participation and Invites Proposals Sebastopol, CA--The O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference will explore the technology of abundance and constraints March 9-12, 2009, at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose, California. O'Reilly Media and Program Chair Brady Forrest invite proposals for ETech 2009 conference sessions, panel discussions, and tutorials, as well as brief and rapid-fire High Order Bits. ETech will gather hackers, grass roots developers, researchers, strategists, makers, thought leaders, artists, entrepreneurs, business developers, venture capitalists, city planners, medical professionals, life scientists, CxOs and IT managers, doers, and other technical visionaries. These futurists will turn their energies toward reinventing the ways in which their lives, and those of the entire world, can use new technologies. Centered around the technology of abundance and constraint, the program will define how those technologies can intersect for a better world. Read more here. ... ETech is over and a great time was had by all. Our presentation was dogged by technical difficulties that meant I ended up using old slides but everyone seemed to enjoy it regardless. With hindsight I think Charles and I should have been more clear with our objectives: the talk wasn't about collective intelligence per se but rather complexity and how that effects interface decisions... Still, I really enjoyed speaking and we had loads of interesting conversations off the back of it. And that brings me on to the most important aspect of ETech - the conversations. I've never found that many sharp people gathered together in one place before. Every person I met seemed to have some combination of skills outside of the norm and brought unique perspectives to bear on every topic. Here are some examples: I chatted with Timo from Nature about getting academia more involved in sharing knowledge and community building, something he's been doing for a while and I've been talking about with my friend Chris at the EES . Charles and I talked to a chap called Karl from the Rockefeller Institute about socio-political development, the evolution of civilisations, the long tail of micro-cultures and weak signal detection. We spent an afternoon with Peter Biddle of Microsoft discussing how the internet is effecting our culture, about what it's like to work for Bill Gates and where his genius is as a businessman, and how Peter's managed to carve out a sem ... I'm an long time devotee of ETech, the OReilly conference devoted to Emerging Technologies, but unfortunately, I won't be able to make it to San Diego this year. However, I was delighted to find that Berkeley is holding the academic equivalent of ETech here in Berkeley. Called the Berkeley EECS Annual Research Symposium, or BEARS for short, it is a day when the Berkeley Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department shows off its stuff. The event is not well publicized, and appears to be targeted largely at the companies who sponsor research at Berkeley, but it is open to the public, and free. I've gone to the event in the past, and if the past is anything to judge by, it should be fascinating. The full program is available online, but highlights from the morning include Boing Boing editor David Pescovitz quizzing the faculty members on how new technologies will disrupt traditional industries and Wired Magazine editor Adam Rogers quizzing them on what technological innovations will create new industries. The afternoon is devoted to open houses at the various research labs -- you can go to labs you never knew existed in downtown Berkeley and see the wonderful and wacky things that very bright grad students are working on. Check it out. Highly recommended.... ... Source: submit.sendung.net --- 5 days ago
