ETech 2009 CFP: Living, Reinvented

Hurry! The Call For Participation for ETech 2009 closes this Friday (9/19). We've got a lot of great submissions so far, but we'd like to see more. The submissions will all be reviewed by mid-October. Below are the major themes of the conference. If you've worked on technology in any of these areas submit a talk . City Tech: Our cities are growing, getting bigger faster than ever before. People are rushing to them in search of economic and social opportunity -- jobs, urban living, and access to culture. How can technology help us create livable, prosperous, sustainable cities? What should mass transit look like? How can we infuse urban infrastructure with sustainability? How are cities using citizens data to become smarter? What can economics tell us about the way urban populations will change and behave? Materials & Mechanics: Mechanics and materials develop hand-in-hand. The creation of a new, lighter metal enables iPhones and Mars Explorers. We'll examine the latest in mechanics and the materials that enable new developments. What mechanisms will be possible? How will the coming age of materials change our clothes , our products, and our everyday lives? Can they be made the cradle2cradle way or will we simply be clogging our landfills with ingenious, meticulously crafted waste? Personalized Healthcare: Medical technology is something that almost everyone comes to rely on, whether it's hopeful, preventive care in the form of Resevera ...

Living, Reinvented: The Technology of Abundance and Constraints ETech Opens Call for Participation and Invites Proposals Sebastopol, CA--The O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference will explore the technology of abundance and constraints March 9-12, 2009, at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose, California. O'Reilly Media and Program Chair Brady Forrest invite proposals for ETech 2009 conference sessions, panel discussions, and tutorials, as well as brief and rapid-fire High Order Bits. ETech will gather hackers, grass roots developers, researchers, strategists, makers, thought leaders, artists, entrepreneurs, business developers, venture capitalists, city planners, medical professionals, life scientists, CxOs and IT managers, doers, and other technical visionaries. These futurists will turn their energies toward reinventing the ways in which their lives, and those of the entire world, can use new technologies. Centered around the technology of abundance and constraint, the program will define how those technologies can intersect for a better world. Read more here. ...

ETech is over and a great time was had by all. Our presentation was dogged by technical difficulties that meant I ended up using old slides but everyone seemed to enjoy it regardless. With hindsight I think Charles and I should have been more clear with our objectives: the talk wasn't about collective intelligence per se but rather complexity and how that effects interface decisions... Still, I really enjoyed speaking and we had loads of interesting conversations off the back of it. And that brings me on to the most important aspect of ETech - the conversations. I've never found that many sharp people gathered together in one place before. Every person I met seemed to have some combination of skills outside of the norm and brought unique perspectives to bear on every topic. Here are some examples: I chatted with Timo from Nature about getting academia more involved in sharing knowledge and community building, something he's been doing for a while and I've been talking about with my friend Chris at the EES . Charles and I talked to a chap called Karl from the Rockefeller Institute about socio-political development, the evolution of civilisations, the long tail of micro-cultures and weak signal detection. We spent an afternoon with Peter Biddle of Microsoft discussing how the internet is effecting our culture, about what it's like to work for Bill Gates and where his genius is as a businessman, and how Peter's managed to carve out a sem ...

I'm an long time devotee of ETech, the OReilly conference devoted to Emerging Technologies, but unfortunately, I won't be able to make it to San Diego this year. However, I was delighted to find that Berkeley is holding the academic equivalent of ETech here in Berkeley. Called the Berkeley EECS Annual Research Symposium, or BEARS for short, it is a day when the Berkeley Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department shows off its stuff. The event is not well publicized, and appears to be targeted largely at the companies who sponsor research at Berkeley, but it is open to the public, and free. I've gone to the event in the past, and if the past is anything to judge by, it should be fascinating. The full program is available online, but highlights from the morning include Boing Boing editor David Pescovitz quizzing the faculty members on how new technologies will disrupt traditional industries and Wired Magazine editor Adam Rogers quizzing them on what technological innovations will create new industries. The afternoon is devoted to open houses at the various research labs -- you can go to labs you never knew existed in downtown Berkeley and see the wonderful and wacky things that very bright grad students are working on. Check it out. Highly recommended.... ...

The week of September 22nd I am going to be flying across the Atlantic for the third PICNIC Network . Ever since i heard about the conference last fall I've wanted to attend. My friends' stories last year focused on the many RFID-enabled art pieces. As discussed in this interview these were developed by Mediamatic, a digital art lab. Last year Mediamatic offers PICNIC delegates some fun and intriguing services. An RFID-tag was added to the PICNIC badges, and linked to the delegates profile on the PICNIC network. A team of top notch hackers, developers and dreamers got involved and came up with cute, fun and relevant new services. Remind us! . "Last year we had the first version of the hackers camp where we built some cool physical interfaces for the PICNIC social network. We had the Photobooth , Badger , The Friend-Drink station , I-tea and of course a whole range of inspiring designs that we only could realise later." Mediamatic is going to be hosting another hacking workshop and I'll be volunteering . Additionally there are a number of sessions and day long minitracks: Surprising Africa has a great selection of content. I've never been to Africa, but there is an increasing amount of tech heading there. Google, Nokia and Vodafone are going to be describing their initiatives. Ethan Zuckerman will be discussing citizen journalism in Africa; Ethan gave an amazing talk at last year's ETech on this topic ( Radar post ). Visible City is exp ...
