This July was good to New Orleans. No major storms nearby, and a wealth of visitors packing the streets, clubs, restaurants. The ESSENCE MUSIC FESTIVAL, the big cocktail convention (seriously), then an international classical piano competition (ditto), and the SCLC's national convention--compared to last July, when the streets were empty, the resettled part of the city was thriving and virbrant. August brings a different mood. In Friday's Times-Picayune , we learn that the Army Corps of Engineers is now scrambling--the paper's word--to reinforce a crucial floodwall abutting a neighborhood that suffered disastrous flooding three years ago. Apparently, the Corps--which "concluded" on its own that Congress hadn't authorized it to build a new, stronger, more deeply anchored floodwall before completing so-called 100-year flood protection in 2011--has realized the floodwall is far more vulnerable than it had thought. More disturbing is the fact that the problem is the elevation figures the Corps used, right after Katrina, in calculating what was needed to strengthen the existing wall. They were "culled" from the original floodwall design plans. It's been well established by the independent forensic investigations into the Katrina disaster that the Corps had a bad habit of using old, outdated elevation figures in the original design of the failed structures. So why "cull" those after the disaster proved them so disastrously wrong? Combin ... Source: www.accessatlanta.com --- 31 days ago

Times: 7:30pm Encounters, MUSIC@Menloâ&128;&153;s signature series of full-length evening events led by an elite group of todayâ&128;&153;s most renowned musical authorities, illuminate the ESSENCE of the FESTIVALâ&128;&153;s MUSIC through insightful discussion. Over the FESTIVALâ&128;&153;s first five seasons, the scope of the Encounters series has greatly expanded, encompassing not only the historical context in which the MUSIC of the FESTIVALâ&128;&153;s concert series was created, but also the sweeping social, cultural, and technological trends that have shaped classical MUSIC at large. MUSIC@Menloâ&128;&153;s 2008 Encounters carry on in this spirit of intrepid curiosity. The series begins in ancient times with an investigation of one of Western civilizationâ&128;&153;s most consequential intellectual conflicts and culminates with a look at the creative impulses driving the multicultural landscape of classical MUSIC today. The Encounters series represents MUSIC@Menloâ&128;&153;s commitment to a context-rich approach to musical discovery and forms an integral component of the FESTIVAL experience. Encounters take place in Martin Family Hall, Menlo Schoolâ&128;&153;s multimedia facility. Encounter IV: Future Forward: Exploring the Here and Now with Ara Guzelimian MUSIC, like all the arts, is in a constant process of reinventing itself while reflecting its own times. THIS WEEKEND MARKS 39TH ANNIVERSARY OF LANDMARK MUSIC FESTIVAL The Woodstock Musc & Art Fair took place August 15 to August 18, 1969. This weekend we remember the landmark event with a few takes on Joni Mitchell 's song of celebration, written from the perspective most of us have on this FESTIVAL, i.e. from footage seen on television screens and the second hand glow picked up from attendees. Unable to be there in person, Mitchell watched the happening unfold on TV and yet captured the ESSENCE sans the mud, mess and mind-altering additives. In the midst of FESTIVAL season, it seems fitting to pause for a moment and honor this grandpappy of modern MUSIC gatherings. And for those seeking a taste of the actual event pop over here for our Sunday Spin from May that focused on the Woodstock soundtrack. By the time we got to Woodstock We were half a million strong And everywhere there was song and celebration And I dreamed I saw the bombers jet planes Riding shotgun in the sky And they were turning into butterflies Above our nation Though best known for the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young version, we looked for some perhaps less familiar takes. We make a false start with Joni Mitchell attempting to play "Woodstock" at the Isle of Wight. Joni is able to get through the song with this lovely solo piano version from BBC TV in 1970. Iain Matthews' Southern Comfort take a nice crack at the song. For a unique interpretation of Joni Mitchell's gem ... Source: www.topix.com --- 18 days ago
The recording studio of Daddy Yankee is in a modest house that looks just like any other in Carolina, a town on the outskirts of San Juan, Puerto Rico, that is home to the reggaeton movement. Inside, it's a different story. There's an expensive, design-conscious look to the floors, walls and the glass-enclosed booth equipped with the latest sound technology. Construction materials are scattered around the building as the renovation continues, but reggaeton star Yankee (whose real name is Ramon Ayala) has recently wrapped another major project: the feature film "Talento de Barrio." "Barrio," which he produced and stars in and which tells a story of the Puerto Rican barrio, had its premiere in July at the New York Latino Film FESTIVAL and is slated for release in theaters in September. The soundtrack, which includes Yankee's hit single "Pose," was released August 12 on Machete Records. Q: What can your fans expect to hear on the "Talento de Barrio" soundtrack?" Daddy Yankee: This album reflects my personal taste. I don't limit myself as an artist, and I have no musical limits whatsoever. I explore every kind of MUSIC. There are artists who remain faithful to one sound. Not me. In ESSENCE, this is a musical trip through reggaeton, hip-hop, vallenato, merengue, rock, soca, bachata and bounce, combined with the electro pop and dance on "Pose." All of the songs are new, and I think that they will be equally well received by purists and ... Source: www.rap-up.com --- 63 days ago
