Last week, I ran a poll about the number of ebooks people purchased each month. The results suggest that most people don't buy ebooks, but get them from various free sources, such as Project Gutenberg, Biblomania and O'Reilly Open Books. Fifty-nine percent of respondents said they bought no books during the month. However, the buyers more than made up for the free reading public. If we take the middle point of each of the ranges of books purchased (e.g. 1.5 books per month for those who said they buy one to three books up to 11 books for those who answered "10+"), the average number of books purchased during a month for all 147 respondents is 1.45. This suggests that,... ...

The EXTACO jetBook EBook Reader sounds like it can do what the Kindle was supposed to do: change the way we read. Sure, the iPhone 3G and the Kindle both do very good jobs of being EBook readers, but does the job as well as the jetBook. Unlike the Kindle, the jetBook does not use an E-Ink screen but instead a crisp, white screen--meaning that low light reading shouldn't be as big a problem. Also, users can search and cross-reference the text using bookmarks. Users will also be able to search the contents of the e-library and get a list of every instance found in the book's content. For more, here's a comparison table with the jetBook and its rivals. Here's a feature list from the company's website: • Support for e-Book contents in Albanian, Catalan, Danish, Dutch, English, Faeroese, Finnish, French, Galician, German, Icelandic, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Croatian, Czech, Estonian, Hungarian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Slovenian and other European languages • Bookmarks and auto page turn functionality • Adjustable font type and 6 different sizes • Screen rotation support for both portrait & landscape modes • Built-in MP3 player that supports background playback • Support for .txt, .pdf, .jpg, .gif, .png and .bmp file formats • SD card slot (up to 2 GB) • Internal Li-ion polymer battery • Battery: 20 hours of continuous, active use! Retailing for $349.95, it comes with a power ada ...

Okay...here is my deal: I read a lot...I love books (paper back, hard back - trade)...i can say i may be a little addicted to the smell and i will admit i have pet my pretties from time to time. BUT i have run out of room for all books except those that belong in part of a collection on my shelves. So I have to break down and get a Reader for those that i can not buy and put on a shelf. Its too hard to read on a pc...glare hurts my eyes. I have started looking into ebooks (will admit i have only ever read a few - and only because a writer i liked had pub'd some electronically prior to paper). I had no idea that by buying the hardware to read "on the go" i would have to tie myself to a type or even lose out to certain authors. SO....i want a Reader - that i can use with any epud book and that will not prevent me from also reading it on my mac. If i could ask for anything else i would also ask for a color screen cause i am gonna miss my pretty covers but that doesnt seem to be an option now. Question: if i get a 505 does that mean i cant buy any any books from amazon? or vice versa? Which Reader do you guys suggest? Are any of the rumors floating around true about apple creating one...cause that would be great and i know it would work with my macbook? Is the Iliad heavy? Any help would be appreciated. ...

Few topics get readers as worked up as when discussing whether dedicated EBook readers are the cat's meow or not.  Amazon recently was talking up their sales numbers for the Kindle and Sony has been pushing their Reader for quite some time.  While dedicated EBook readers are certainly good ways to enjoy ebooks I prefer reading them on my phone due to its constant presence on my person.  That doesn't take away the enjoyable reading experience that is offered by a good EBook Reader, however, and the latest generation of the Bookeen Cybook Gen3 looks pretty sweet.  This third generation CyBook is certainly thin and light and with an SD slot can hold the biggest EBook libraries.  Throw in the ability to play MP3 audio files and the CyBook is a dandy device.  The only drawback for some will be the $350 price tag, a pretty hefty one for something just for reading books.  Of course that is cheaper than the Kindle so that might not be too bad.  It's a pretty spiffy looking Reader for sure.  It handles Mobipocket format ebooks making it pretty useful for exisiting libraries.
