(5 comments - 24 views) I like Science Fiction. I like flim. Why can't Hollywood make a decent SF movie anymore? I left this movie feeling very angry- feeling like I've just been pandered to by someone creating films for the mentally retarded. I can just imagine the writer giving the pitch: "So, there's this explosive crystal see and the mom is wearing it around her neck- it looks like a diamond pendant but actually it's got enough firepower to blow up a football stadium ... and the A.I. in the pentagon has arranged for the mom's son - Timmy and his band camp - to play the national anthem during the State of the Union. When the High F is reached the harmonic resonance frequency will detonate the diamond pendant blowing up the president. Oh and there will be an AI like HAL - only all shiny and shit." Who gives something like this a green light? I almost walked out after the lady fell in a pool of "liquid nitrogen" and emerged as if she'd just swum a few laps. The AI was very flashy. In fact the computer screens it runs on looked to have been created in Adobe Flash by a Learning Annex drop-out. This was the crappiest in a long line of crappy SF movies coming out of Hollywood. Are they really writing for dumb, dumb people or are there other forces at work? Along with the stockmarket crash - we could use a Hollywood crash. For film makers to make do with 10% of the budget. So for Science Fiction, good writing and acting are relied on. Hi ...

Eighteen year-old Joshua Stringer of Wellington can count himself as one of the elite — making it all the way to EAGLE Scout in his Boy Scout group.     As his final EAGLE Scout project, Stringer constructed a shelter in Jefferson Park. With the city pouring the concrete, Stringer, with the help of his own troop and family built the structure with steel beams, welding them and drilling holes in the concrete to make them stable.     Stringer, a senior at Wellington High School and a member of the Cross County team, has been in Boy Scout Troop No. 304 since he was in fourth or fifth grade, he said.     In those years, he’s had time to complete numerous projects, his sash full of badges from activities he’s done in the past. Stringer said getting his EAGLE distinction was not an easy task.     Starting late, Stringer only had a few weeks to complete the project before he turned 18 and his deadline was up.     The Wellington senior started by raising money for his project — $2,000 total — by soliciting local businesses.     Quickly, he moved to get family and friends together on the structure, completing it the day before his birthday, Aug. 11.     “It was a lot of hard work but it was worth it,” he said. “I like to go by it everyday and see the people using it. The families and kids in the park needed a shelter to go when it rained or to get away from the sun and this was just the perfect project,”     Scout leader Brad Ewing said he ...

After a 1-5 start, the Plymouth North volleyball team rattled off three wins in its next matches. This has pushed the Eagles into a position to qualify for the postseason. To reach the tournament, the Eagles needed to win six of their last eight games heading into last night’s (Friday) game against Marshfield. In Wednesday’s 3-0 (10-25, 2-25, 18-25) loss to first-place Dennis-Yarmouth, the Eagles had to shift people around due to a couple injuries. Amanda Hill, Kelly Young, and Carly Martinsen all played well for North. The Eagles (4-8 overall, 1-6 Atlantic Coast League) beat Wareham, 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-11) Monday afternoon. The Eagles got strong setting from Martinsen and Chelsea Small, and Jenny Woodford, Amanda Hill, and Kelly Young all served well. “The defense was consistently solid all match,” Plymouth North Head Coach Andrew Daigle said. Last Friday, the Eagles lost 3-0 (9-25, 12-25, 12-25) to Falmouth. The Eagles get back into action Monday morning at Silver Lake. ...
