The Vinkhuijzen Collection of Military Costume Illustration has drawings of uniforms and regimental regalia from all over the world. Assembled by one of these great, eccentric collectors of the late 19th Century, Dr. H. J. Vinkhuijzen, a Dutch medical doctor who started out as an army physician and eventually rose to the position of official court physician to Prince Alexander of Netherlands. He pulled plates out of books, colored in black and white drawings and painted his own watercolor illustrations. His collection includes pictures of the Soldiers of many different nations and eras , from military superpowers like the Roman Empire , France and Great Britain , to lesser known, but no less formidable forces, like Byzantium and Persia and even taking in such minnows as Luxembourg , Monaco and Montenegro . Due to Vinkhuijzen's unusual classification system it can be hard to find some of the more interesting images, such as pictures of Etruscan cavalry , Spanish military musicians and 1830's Belgian ambulance . ... The world is better off with one less new-age "healer" and one more murderous thug, Radovan Karadzic, caught. He's the man accused of being responsible, among other things, for the slaughter of some 8,000 Bosnians during the Balkans War of the 1990s. As that link recounting Karadzic's deeds points out, and as myriad other news stories do as well, the massacre at Srebrenica was the worst mass murder in Europe since the Holocaust. Serb Soldiers overran a supposed "safe haven" and, while Dutch peacekeepers working for the United Nations watched helplessly, killed the 8,000 Muslim men and boys. For this, Karadzic will be tried -- though as the Wall Street Journal laments , this could take "years," according to a judge at the relevant UN tribunal. It never does to compare horrors for scale, though it is worth noting the varying reactions to them. The Srebrenica horror was part of what finally led the United States to intervene in the war, at least from bomber height, after Europe and the UN fecklessly tried ending it. Meanwhile, the phrase, "worst mass murder since," if used carelessly and inaccurately without the adjectival "Europe," brings out the point that the world has in fact been filled with even worse slaughters than the Srebrenica atrocity. Far more human lives were snuffed out in other places -- Rwanda, China, Indonesia, perhaps most infamously in Cambodia, where the Khmer Rouge killed more than a million people imposing the ...

A survey of 261 members of military unions shows that half the Dutch military believe the mission in Afghanistan is pointless. The Chairman of the Association of Dutch Officers and former army commander Hans Couzy called the survey results worrying: "The bosses say its worthwhile and that things are fine, but if you ask people anonymously, most of them say its pointless". The survey also shows that three-quarters of those interviewed do not have an accurate picture of the situation in Afghanistan, while more than half feel they do not have the support of politics. Most of the Soldiers say they have the support of their immediate environment, but do not feel supported by the Dutch people. ... Source: www.topix.com --- 108 days ago
