Franchisees want more oversight and control of ad budget after marketing executive accused The largest group of Dunkin’ Donuts franchisees is calling for increased oversight over the chain’s advertising funds following the news of an alleged kickback scheme involving a former marketing executive at the chain’s parent company. The DD Independent Franchise Owners issued a statement Thursday urging Canton-based Dunkin’ Brands Inc. to improve the controls over the franchisees’ ad funds by including franchisees in the oversight of the funds and by implementing regular, independent audits that are shared with all franchisees. The organization’s statement came a day after The Patriot Ledger reported that federal prosecutors accused Carolyn Kravetz, a former director of communications at Dunkin’ Brands, of steering nearly $400,000 in Dunkin’ Brands contract business to a friend’s graphic design firm in return for receiving half of the payments as kickbacks. “From what I’ve heard, franchise operators are quite upset about this,” said Kevin McCarthy, a Cohasset lawyer and chairman of the franchisee group’s board of directors. “This is their money and they expect Dunkin’ Donuts to be managing it carefully.” McCarthy said franchise agreements require Dunkin’ Donuts franchisees to send 5 percent of their weekly revenues to Dunkin’ Brands for marketing expenses. “One of the major complaints that a number of operators have is because they don’t ... A study by the Center for an Urban Future , called Attack of the Chains? is showing that Brooklyn prefers Dunkin' Donuts over Starbucks, the Daily News reports. The center's director Jonathan Bowles says, "It has to do with different shopping culture. The Dunkin' Donuts is more a middle-class type of place than Starbucks. Not everybody can afford $4 lattes. It’s more of a working person's Starbucks. " The chain has 89 outlets in Brooklyn--71 more than Starbucks in the borough. Plus, chains like KFC and Payless thrive in Brooklyn--but will gentrification slowly replace those shops with Cosi's and J.Crew? The study also provides a borough-by-borough breakdown of what stores are in each borough (did you know NYC only has two Crate & Barrel's?). ...
This is something that everyone already knew instinctively, but its' still interesting to see the figures. There are so many more Dunkin Donuts in Brooklyn than Startbucks that it's not even close. Make that 89 Dunkin Donuts vs. 18 Starbucks. Brooklyn also leads the city in the number of Payless Shoes, Walgreens, Jimmy Jazz Clothing, 7-Eleven and Golden Krust Bakery.
