Duke Energy Corp. and the nation's largest car company are teaming up to smooth the way for a future of electric vehicles. That future requires a revamped power system that can integrate a new breed of cars drawing massive amounts of electricity from the grid. General Motors Corp. said the partnership, which also includes the Electric Vehicle Research Institute and other large utilities such as Southern California Edison, will deal with myriad complicated issues from tax incentives to where and when the cars can be recharged. GM is working to bring the Chevrolet Volt rechargeable car to showrooms in late 2010. It's being designed to run on an electric motor powered by lithium-ion batteries. When fully charged, the car will be able to travel 40 miles on battery power. For longer trips, a small internal combustion engine will recharge the batteries to keep the Volt moving. “This vehicle is real. It's coming into production,” said Britta Gross, a GM engineer. “We know that when the vehicle is in the showroom and ready for sale, it's got to work seamlessly with the infrastructure.” Duke has been working on a new “smart grid” in Charlotte for several years with future widespread production of electric cars in mind. The Charlotte-based utility has been installing two-way data communication devices on its power lines and new smart meters on selected Charlotte homes to research how it could work. It has retrofitted several Toyota Prius hy ...

GREENSBORO, Ga. - Before hiring football coach David Cutcliffe, then-Duke athletics director Joe Alleva said the school would not compromise its academic standards in order to get recruits. The high admissions standards often have been used as a reason for Duke's football struggles because some top recruits who get into other schools can't gain admission to Duke. "I really embrace who we are," Cutcliffe said Monday. "It's our greatest advantage, a Duke education. If you're a great football player and a solid student, the reason they won't come is the sorry football program. It wasn't the academic requirements. It was the football program." Cutcliffe said Duke's administration wants good students but will interview recruits and work with the Duke staff as long as the players have good character and credentials. "We don't have to have all perfect ACT and SAT scores," Cutcliffe said. "We've just got to sign good students, good people, people who want to excel academically and athletically." The goal, Cutcliffe said, is for Duke to get to the point where players want to play in a great football program and get a good education on the side. He doesn't want players just coming to get a good education without caring about the football program. With the Blue Devils in the midst of of 25-game ACC losing streak, that time may be years down the road. ...

Tom Wopat The Metropolitan Room Until July 31 You’ll have more fun on the caba ret scene, where two seasoned pros have cooled off the month of July like a frozen mojito. Every Thursday night, when the curtain falls on the Broadway musical A Catered Affair , Tom Wopat shakes it down to the great new Metropolitan Room at 34 West 22 Street to knock the crowds right out of their sandals. This shaggy dog looks better at 56 than he did as a pup, cutting his baby teeth on the old TV series The Dukes of Hazzard , and you gotta laugh when he tells the audience, “If you like me, I’m Tom Wopat; if you don’t, I’m John Schneider.  read more » ...

By Bill Cavala A veteran of over 30 years in Sacramento It seems that former San Diego Republican Congressman Randy “Duke” Cunningham, now serving his sentence for corruption in a minimum security federal facility, has petitioned President Bush for clemency . And what Republican is more deserving? Elected on his war hero record, “Duke” became an icon of the Republican right. Following the entrepreneurial spirit that guided his party, Duke parlayed his position in the government and his GOP credentials to a point where he could influence the award of tax-paid contracts. A friend got the contracts. “Duke” got, among other things, a mansion. Isn’t that Republican teamwork? The American way? Of course, it was against the law. But “Duke” was bigger than a few silly rules. Besides, the good he did in conservative causes deserved a more fitting reward than a simple Congressional salary. He made money for others, it was only right they give some to him. Now, stripped of office and of his ill-gotten gains, he only asks that he no longer be treated like a common criminal. After all, is he worse than Karl Rove? Maybe the President should consider blanket pardons for all Republicans in public office during his two terms as President? After all, to err is human… Bill Cavala was Deputy Director of the Assembly Speaker’s Office of Member Services where he worked for over 30 years. He attended undergraduate and graduate school in the 1960’s and ...
