I haven’t been playing my Rock Band game as much lately because of all the reports I’ve read online about the Drum pedal snapping in two. The pedal is made of plastic and based from the way it’s constructed, vigorous use of the pedal will really make it break. I’ve been trying to find a [...] ...

Massive housing project under way at Army base in North Country The nationwide privatization of military housing faces a big test at Fort Drum, where a building boom is under way to meet a soldier population projected to soar to 18,500 by 2012. As part of an Army-wide expansion, the base in rural Jefferson County that is home to the 10th Mountain Division has swelled with 6,000 new troops in the last five years, and expects 2,500 more by 2012, for a total increase of 85 percent. To house these military members and their families, the Army entered into a $520 million partnership with Actus Lend Lease, a Nashville, Tenn.,-based division of the Lend Lease Group, a multinational corporation headquartered in Sydney, Australia. The agreement was made possible by the federal government's push to privatize military housing. The massive North Country development, scheduled to be done by 2012, consists of 1,399 new single-family homes, 192 apartment units and four community centers, and the renovation of 2,270 homes on the 107,265-acre base, said Joseph McLaughlin, project director. Actus and the Army formed a partnership, Fort Drum Mountain Community Homes. The private company -- with Actus as managing partner controlling 51 percent -- marks a switch from past building, much of which was done by the Army Corps of Engineers. "In the big scheme of things, it's a good idea," Fort Drum housing chief William Bamann said. A lot of the Army's resou ...

The main focus of Senator Hillary Clinton’s visit to Fort Drum was to sit down with injured soldiers and their families. Clinton is working on laws that will provide them with more support and better access to help. The Senator toured Fort Drum’s Warrior Transition Unit which assists wounded warriors and says she’s happy with the program and believes on a national level more and more attention is being given to injured troops. Clinton is introducing a bill that would make it easier for injured soldiers to accept charitable gifts, valuable supplies and resources that can help with recovery. Clinton also took time to talk with 10th Mountain Division Commanding Officer general Michael Oates. She’s optimistic about the war in iraq, but says now, attention must be turned to the other front in the war: Afghanistan. Senator Clinton also met with local officials at Jefferson Community College to talk about her hopes to make the winter easier for New Yorkers. She is working on a law that would provide tax credits to people who spend thousands of dollars on heating oil. Jeff Nelson reports: [See post to watch Flash video] ...

The Hall of Fame weekend of 2008 had a rousing sendoff Monday evening as roughly 8,000 spectators jammed the home stands at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium for the annual Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival Drum Corp International Competition. The competition featured eight of the nation’s top corps, whose members ranged from ages 16 to 21, including the Stark County-based Bluecoats. “Think of this as marching band on steroids,” said Phoenix native Stuart Schulman. Schulman competed with the California-based Santa Clara Vanguards for five years as a Drum major. Now, too old to compete, Schulman teaches the Vanguard tuba players. He said the corps, which has members from all over the U.S. and members from Canada and Japan, has been practicing daily and has competed across the country. Next week is the final stop at the national competition in Bloomington, Ind. “We compete at high school, pro and college stadiums,” he said. “We had a competition at the Georgia Dome (Atlanta), the Alamo Dome (San Antonio) and Stanford Stadium. ... This is one of the larger high school venues we compete at.” The spectators came from all over the state. Hundreds, if not thousands, of high school band members came along with their high school bandmates. Norton High School’s Lorin Curnutte and Kayla Simpson were among those. The two said they’ve both attended the annual event every year they’ve been in high school. “I love watching the Drum corps,” ...

It's almost time for the stick-flipping madness of Guitar Center's Drum Off 2008! In its 20th year the contest is stronger than ever, boasting a grand prize valued at over $45,000. For the past two decades, Drum Off and Guitar Center have "been committed to providing drummers across the country the opportunity to pursue their musical aspirations and achieve their dreams." The contest reaches drummers from towns and cities across the country by hosting preliminary rounds at the 214 Guitar Center locations. Last year's winner, Donnie Marple, was from Keyser, WV, and had never had a Drum lesson in his life. Check out his mind-blowing performance and read his story at the link below. Sign-ups for the preliminary rounds begin August 1 on a "first-come, first-serve" basis. The first 30 people to register in person at each store will be eligible. Local competitions begin on September 23rd, and one winner from each of the 214 locations will move on to the district competitions. Entrants benefit not only from the opportunity to progress toward the grand prize and potentially a career, but also through the networking opportunity that the contest provides for local musicians. The 24 district champions will move on to regionally hosted semi-finals (6 locations), and then the final competitors will meet up for the championship Drum-Off in Los Angeles in January in front of a panel of celebrity judges. -Past judges include Steward Copeland (The Polic ...
