T revor Foltz was six months old last fall, fresh off a visit to Disney World in Orlando, when the spasms first began. Healthy until that point in his life, he began thrusting backward in his car seat, repeatedly and forcefully, as he rode with his parents north toward home in Rhode Island. "I thought it was temper tantrums," says his mother, Danielle. The next day, at home, Trevor was hit with a series of 40 convulsions and rushed to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with infantile spasms, a rare form of epilepsy. Treatment would cost $1,600 per vial of steroid Drug H.P. Acthar Gel, and Trevor would need three of them. As if the idea of a $4,800 tab wasn't bad enough, when the Foltzes submitted their claim, they found out the company that made the Drug, Questcor Pharmaceuticals , had just recently jacked up the price—to $23,000 per vial, or $69,000 for a three-vial treatment—and the insurance company wasn't going to pay. And all the while, unbeknownst to anyone at that time, an alternative, for $15, existed. On Thursday, the Joint Economic Committee will open hearings in Congress on dramatic price hikes for drugs used to treat children, with a focus on companies such as Questcor and Ovation Pharmaceuticals, which in 2006 bought rights to a Drug that treats heart problems in premature infants, and increased the price 1,800 percent to $1,875 per three-vial treatment. "We need answers to why a company would increase the price of ...

Image: http://images.teamsugar.com/files/upl1/19/193328/29_2008/935480-001.preview.jpg As part of the War on Drugs US federal and local authorities seize cash made from Drug trafficking. The practice takes away an incentive for smuggling, and gives the agents an incentive to catch traffickers. The guideline for how that Money can be spent, according to most local laws, is the vague standard of "for law-enforcement purposes." This week's *Economist* itemized what can be considered law enforcement (http://www.economist.com/world/na/displaystory.cfm?STORY_ID=11707305) for spending purposes. Seized assets have been used for the following: * One Texas county used it on a margarita machine. * A Texas district attorney took his whole staff to Hawaii for a training seminar. * Another Texan DA spent thousands of dollars on his re-election campaign. * In Indiana Money goes to a general school fund. (A good idea.) * A Georgia sheriff bought a $90,000 sports car, used to advertise an anti-Drug program. (Don't tell the kids drugs paid for the car!) Unfortunately, many state laws give authorities wide discretion to seize assets even without any verdict. And with such an incentive to get the restriction-free Money, sometimes they get it wrong. It is common knowledge doctors receive all sorts of free gifts from Drug manufacturers , including pens, paper, and coffee mugs, among many other gifts. Since the gifts are so common place these days, it may not seem like a big deal to have doctors accepting such gifts. The Drug industry will explain they are simply trying to help educate doctors so that new and better medications are given to patients who can benefit from them. It may surprise you to learn doctors prescribe medications more frequently for drugs they receive gifts for over other similar medications. The real concern about Drug manufacturers giving gifts to doctors who prescribe medications is the potential for only prescribing medications produced by the Drug manufacturer giving gifts, even if it is not the best Drug for the patient. Due to this concern, Senator Charles Grassley initiated hearings into the financial ties between the pharmaceutical industry and the American Psychiatric Association (APA). In 2006 the APA has received over nearly one third of its operating budget from the pharmaceutical industry. There is a real concern Drug manufacturers are influencing prescribing practices of psychiatrists based upon the financial ties. Although there is no direct evidence yet, and there probably will not be a smoking gun, the appearance of improper influence is enough to cause significant concerns and is not merely baseless speculation. Harvard pediatrician Josep ...
