Don’t count anything other than the audacity of hype when it comes to the War On (Some) Drugs: As president, I would use the bully pulpit of my office to warn Americans about the dangers of performance enhancing drugs, and I would put greater resources into enforcement of existing Drug laws. I would also convene a summit of the commissioners of the professional sports leagues, as well as university presidents, to explore options for decreasing the use of these drugs. So much for anything new, huh ? H/T: Freedom Democrats ...

OMAR TORRES/AFP/Getty Images The chaotic Drug violence in Mexico continues unabated. With more than 6,000 killed in the past few years, today we can add yet another victim: the country's national police chief , killed by gunmen outside his home in Mexico City yesterday. Edgar Eusebio Millán Gómez, the public face of Mexico's offensive against Drug cartels, became the highest-ranking law enforcement official to be killed since the launch of the effort 17 months ago. The assassination could give new confidence to Drug cartels blamed for 6,000 killings in the past 2 1/2 years, and embolden other anti-government groups in this violence-plagued nation. "This could have a snowball effect, even leading to the risk of ungovernability," Luís Astorga, a Mexico City-based sociologist and Drug expert, said in an interview. "It indicates terrible things, a level of weakness in our institutions -- they can't even protect themselves."   ...

You would think that after a truck license scandal that led to a former governor going to jail city and state employees might be a little more diligent about keeping potentially unsafe commercial drivers off the road -- especially those in Chicago's new Office of Compliance. But apparently Russell Baggett, the man in charge of the City of Chicago's Drug testing program, didn't get the memo. Baggett has been fired after somehow excluding over 800 city truck drivers from random mandatory alcohol and Drug tests. He also possibly violated federal regulations when he allowed employees who called in sick the day of their Drug test to skip them altogether. And how did these employees so conveniently schedule their personal day? Baggett routinely warned supervisors the day before their department was to be tested. Asked whether public safety was placed in jeopardy because of Baggett's alleged oversights, [Anthony Boswell, the Denver attorney hired to run the Office of Compliance] said, "It's pretty clear there was that potential. Absolutely. It was a very serious report. It puts people on the road at risk, and we're taking it very seriously. "We will take appropriate action. ... We've already spoken with a number of experts to look into our program and what we need to do to make sure the protocol complies with all applicable law." Photo by smussyolay ...
