Steven Spielberg has officially split with Paramount Pictures and taken his Dreamworks studio with him. The deal is done. As expected, Universal will release Dreamworks' movies--for seven years. And I hear the studio is throwing that $150 million loan into the package as well. While Dreamworks will be producing six films a year, many of them will be in partnership with Paramount. In the first year of this deal, 11 Dreamworks films will be distributed by Paramount. So now we have a glimpse of Paramount in the post-Dreamworks divorce, current credit crunch, era. Also the studio finally clarifies the job duties of Adam Goodman and Brad Weston which I've already reported: they have the same title, but different duties! And they're not co-heads! Disturbia was a surprisingly successful thriller that is probably my favorite Shia LaBeouf film to date (there aren't many). Instead of making a sequel - a path we all know profitable properties like to travel - director D.J. Caruso and LaBeouf went on to make Eagle Eye. And while a rumor has surfaced today via Bloody Disgusting that Dreamworks is eying their "next Disturbia," the potential project is by no means a sequel. Instead, the studio apparently wants to remake the 1971 Austrian thriller Unman, Wittering and Zigo. The film surrounds a 9th grade prep school class whose teacher is murdered. The new teacher that is brought in as a result begins to discover the class' secret - they were behind the murder. Whenever you mix a group of adolescents and murder, I get all kinds of thoughts of the 1984 horror film Children of the Corn. Unman (as this remake ... ... Stocks are slipping: After the Asian markets really took it on the chin, the Dow was up more than 100 points in early trading. Now it's pulled back (again). Meanwhile, Citigroup and Merrill Lynch reported big losses. Inflation under control: Plummeting gas prices have made a big difference in September. This should provide more breathing room for the Fed to lower interest rates still further (not that it seems to be doing much good). ( AP ) Such a deal: California has gotten such a strong response to its short-term debt offering that Treasurer Bill Lockyer has boosted the amount sought, from $4 billion to $4.5 billion. With greater-than-expected demand comes a lower yield. Lockyer has set the preliminary rates at 3.75 percent for the seven-month notes and 4.25 percent for the eight-month notes. And it might be lower still once the institutional buyers are brought in today. ( LAT ) Traffic drops at ports: It's been pretty much the same story all year - and it speaks volumes about the staggering economy. Cargo traffic at the Port of L.A. fell 6.7 percent in September from a year earlier; at the Port of Long Beach, traffic fell 8.5 percent. ( Daily Breeze ) Paramount makes cuts: With Dreamworks gone and parent company Viacom on the ropes, the studio will release fewer films, consolidate some operations and lay off a couple of dozen workers. Just not having Dreamworks will save $50 million in overhead. ( LAT ) Obama pushes back Seri ... Find more results for Dreamworks on RSSMicro.com |
