Filed under: Competitive strategy , Intel (INTC) , Advanced Micro Dev (AMD) It is not very many chips, but it means a great deal, especially from a PR standpoint. Intel (NASDAQ: INTC ) has taken the processor franchise at DreamWorks from smaller rival AMD (NYSE: AMD ). DreamWorks indicated that the Intel products worked much better, a public slap at the incumbent. According to The Wall Street Journal, " DreamWorks Animation said the resulting increase in computing power would substantially shorten the time needed for many computing chores and aid the studio's planned shift next year to 3-D animation." Given how good the press is for Intel, it should be giving the chips to DreamWorks for free. Perhaps that is how it got the contract. Intel's new eight-core chips are extremely powerful and this should be of real benefit to DreamWorks. The news is another demonstration of how bad things are at AMD. The company still has over $5 billion in debt and barely breaks even on an operating basis. Its shares are just above $5. In 2006, they were above $40. AMD can ill afford having its name on the front page matched with another customer loss. Douglas A. Filed under: Action , Sci-Fi & Fantasy , Deals , Scripts , Family Films , Newsstand , DreamWorks Just about every studio is still trying to find its Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter franchise, and here is DreamWorks' latest attempt. According to The Hollywood Reporter , they bought the rights to P.B. Kerr's Children of the Lamp series a while back. Lee Hall wrote a draft before the WGA strike, but the duty of adaptation has now been handed to Dave Guion and Michael Handelman . No time-frame or director has been set for the project. Children of the Lamp is a series of four books that deals with a family of dijinn (known casually to Western culture as genies) who disguise themselves as humans, but can still grant wishes to humans. It centers around two young dijinn twins, John and Philippa Gaunt (nice nod to the Plantegenets there), and their challenges adapting to the world of magic and wish-granting. While honing their skills, they must often confront the powers of evil in order to keep the balance between good and evil. Their adventures take them from their childhood home in Manhattan to the snowy reaches of Nepal. Yes, it sounds more than a little like Harry Potter , albeit with more globe-trekking. Hopefully, that's just a misconception born of Wikipedia and not a reflection of the actual books. Has anyone out there in Cinematical comment land actually read them, and can fill us in? You knew Kung Fu Panda was going to draw a lawsuit from somebody at some time, but we'd have bet on the mother of some kid who got the flying fist of death right in the face and not some Chinese performance artist. Zhao Bandi, who is known for using pandas in his art and fashion designs (including panda prostitutes and concubines), has demanded an apology from DreamWorks in a Beijing court, Variety reports. Besides admonishing DreamWorks for making lead panda Po's eyes green, which he says "has the feeling of evil," Zhao is torqued that Po's dad is a duck. Because that would make kung-fu-fighting animals just too unrealistic. "Many foreigners think the giant panda is not just China's symbol, but also the Chinese people's symbol. Drawing the father of the giant panda as a duck is an insult to the Chinese people," Zhao said. "In a few years time, I'm worried some young Chinese people will think their ancestor is Donald Duck." Zhao, who previously called for a boycott of the movie because he said it would upset Sichuan earthquake victims, doesn't want money, just an apology from the filmmakers. And a pony. And a house made of gingerbread on Gumdrop Lane. [Photo: Getty Images] Source ...
