The question of whether the town will get its first Dunkin' Donuts remains up in the air with town officials concerned about the plan to add the popular coffee and breakfast stop to a shopping center at 284 North Ave. "I continue to see this as unworkable," Planning Board member Gary Lee told developers at a recent hearing. "You're trying too hard for a small site. The realities of the site with the traffic load and the probable parking along North Avenue makes this unworkable." Others have been more blunt. In a memo to the board, Police Chief Steven Shaw wrote that the proposal "falls short on the public safety scale." "I have real concerns about traffic flow, parking and safety," Shaw said. "My concern is that parking will spill out onto the street and existing traffic and crossover traffic will pose a danger to the public." Due to the proximity to Stony Brook Reservoir, Conservation Administrator Michele Grzenda said it would be difficult for the project to expand beyond its existing parking lot, making the proposal a "Herculean effort," according to Planning Board Chairman Al Aydelott. Still, developers believe traffic won't be a problem and that they have enough parking. The Shop would have limited seating and would not have a drive-through. (AP) ― A Pasadena man has been charged with trying to run down three women who spurned his advances at Newport Beach. Prosecutors said Wednesday that Bryan Curiel faces life in prison if convicted of several felony charges, including attempted murder. Farrah Emami, spokeswoman for the Orange County district attorney, says the women rejected Curiel's advances inside a Doughnut Shop Sunday and told him to leave them alone. When they had left the Shop, Curiel allegedly drove at least 50 mph toward the women and three of their friends before crashing into several concrete benches. If you had to sum up the Yankees’ place right now in the city’s sports landscape — one that’s got the first-place Mets, the Super Bowl champs, Brett Favre, and even the U.S. Open — this story would work nicely. As for Ward, it’s no surprise he got caught. According to Newsday , the man did show a resemblance to Chamberlain, but with facial hair, which (unless you're Jason Giambi ), is very un-Yankee-like. Cigarettes were stolen following a break into the Dunkin’ Donuts on Washington Street at the Holbrook line that also allowed the thief to enter the adjacent Super Petroleum gas station. Police found the glass door to the Doughnut Shop smashed when they responded to a burglar alarm shortly after 11 p.m. Thursday. The door connecting the Doughnut Shop and the gas station was smashed open with a rock and many packages of cigarettes were missing, police said. ... Next Time, Cool Out With A Cruller . Pasadena native Bryan Curiel approached a trio of women at a Doughnut Shop in Newport Beach Sunday, and was promptly told to leave them alone. A few minutes later, they left the store, at which point Curiel sped his car directly at them—going "at least 50 mph." Curiel only managed to run over one of their feet before crashing into a nearby concrete bench. He's currently being held on $1 million bail, and charged with several felony charges including attempted murder, for which he'd get life in prison if convicted. Moral of the story? This morning, I selected from my vast wardrobe a shirt that sometimes earns a few comments at the gym - my light green Krispy Kreme doughnuts t-shirt. Coincidentally, I also poured my coffee into a Krispy Kreme mug. Realizing what I'd done, it was obvious that there was only one thing left undone in my accidental promotion of this American Doughnut chain. Blog it. For those of you not familiar with Krispy Kreme, it is a Shop that started in the U.S. south, and quietly grew until a decade or so ago, when the brand began exploding in popularity. Why? Two words - HOT NOW. You could go into their stores, watch the doughnuts being made, and sample them right off the assembly line, as hot and fresh and gooey as can be. A guilty pleasure-fest of empty, fat-producing calories. People would rhapsodize about the pleasures of eating Krispy Kremes, and when a new store would be inaugurated, through effective marketing techniques, huge lines of hungry folks - the zealots and the curious - would await the opening of the doors. Now, from a graphical design perspective, their logo is nowhere near as attractive as many others, and certainly not as appealing as their doughnuts. But KK has earned a lot of brand loyalty, and so - at least for me - they passed the T-shirt test. And the mug test (fair balance: I also have Starbucks mugs).
