Related Articles Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation from matched unrelated Donors in chronic granulomatous disease. Immunol Res. 2008 Oct 10; Authors: Schuetz C, Hoenig M, Gatz S, Speth F, Benninghoff U, Schulz A, Debatin KM, Friedrich W We report on 12 patients with chronic granulomatous disease transplanted with hematopoietic stem cells from matched unrelated (n = 9) or matched sibling Donors (n = 3). The most common infectious complication was pulmonary aspergillosis, which nine patients had previously developed. Only 5 of 12 individuals had normal lung function prior to transplantation. At a mean follow-up of 53 months 9 of the 12 patients are alive including 7 of 9 following matched unrelated donor (MUD) transplantation. One patient died from ARDS, another from systemic BK virus infection, the third from complications of chronic graft-versus-host disease. Seven of nine surviving patients have normal lung function now. HSCT from a MUD is an option worth considering when no matched family donor is available. Restricted lung function prior to HSCT does not appear to be a limiting factor for such treatment. PMID: 18846320 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] ...

Mrs. Z's 2nd grade classroom has been living with desks that are worn out and too small. Her students need a space where they can feel comfortable, a space they can call their own. She needs $1,117 for 20 desks, and we're putting all our efforts to fund her project by this Friday, October 17! If AT readers give just $5 each , we know that we can outfit Mrs. Z's classroom! This week we're focusing on funding Mrs. Z's 20 desks , but here are the other projects we'll be working on in the coming weeks: Basic Supplies: a classroom in Georgia needs basic school supplies such as pencils, paper, crayons, and a pencil sharpener . FUNDED! Activity Tables: Mrs. R's classroom in Tennessee needs seven round activity tables conducive to cooperative learning. Kid-sized couch and Easel: Kindergartners in Tennessee need a kid sized couch for their listening center, a big book magnetic book holder, and a large magnetic write and wipe easel. Kitchen Center: Mrs. P's kids in New York City need a kitchen center and play pots and pans. 20 Desks: Students in Louisiana need 20 desks to have their own space while having the ability to complete group projects. Our goal is to fund this by Friday, October 17th! Projector: Mr. C's middle-schoolers need a projector so they can view art historical powerpoint presentations, instructional and tie-in videos, and present their own multimedia projects to the rest of the class and the school at large. Dear Incredibly Wealthy Readers, A week or so back we announced our participation in the Donors Choose challenge. Specifically, we are raising money for elementary school teachers in the Bronx to bring animals into the classroom and a teacher outside of DC build out his outdoor ecology program. These are worthy, and very affordable, causes. Just imagine it: a tarantula in a 1st grade classroom named after you! If you have a minute and can spare some money for a small donation, it would be much appreciated. There is a banner ad type link if you scroll down on the left sidebar or you can click here . As an added bonus - if you send us your confirmation email from Donor's Choose, we will publicly thank you and link to whatever you want. This a great way to promote your growing gardening blog or network of hardcore fetish sites! Read the comments on this post... ...

There is still no official word from Seed about matching funds and/or prize drawings for the Donors Choose Challenge. However, Janet has posted a list of individual ScienceBloggers' incentives here . Donating to another Scibling's challenge might not contribute to the glory of the geoblogosphere, but it will contribute to education. If I weren't trying to win bragging rights, I would claim that the contribution to education is what matters. But really, pretending that bragging rights aren't important is just sour grapes from an ethicist whose readers do not share her commitment to charity . Bragging rights matter! And we are going to win some - all of us. All of us who donate, anyway - if you don't give, you don't get any bragging rights or warm fuzzies. And since northern hemisphere winter is coming on, most of you will need all the warm fuzzies you can get; please consider donating. Below the fold, I've listed the three projects from my challenge slate where I think your donation will make the most impact. Read the rest of this post... | Read the comments on this post... ...
