Mattingly and Manny, and I think Rafael furcal, live just a few blocks away from me. My hockey game got cancelled, so I went to my favorite watering hole to watch the game (they live in new apartment homes just above the complex), and Mattingly had just walked out. He had been sitting at the bar alone eating dinner next to the couple I just happened to sit by. I Don't think anyone recognized him but the couple (the wife is a HUGE dodger fan.) By their account, he was kind, gracious, and polite... ...

Recollections of favorite moments at Yankee Stadium: -- Yogi Berra "(Don) Larsen's no-hitter. It was a perfect game at that." --- David Cone "People are surprised, but really the first big memory I have was the '95 playoffs, Don Mattingly's first playoff game. The city was so hungry. Yankee fans were so hungry. And when Don Mattingly ran onto the field to do his wind sprints before the game, he got a standing ovation, a thunderous standing ovation that lasted for 20 minutes. ...

FROM JOEL SHERMAN In a column in today's Post, I wrote about how strange it is to see Don Mattingly in anything other than a Yankee uniform. There was something else that jumped out at me seeing Mattingly now as opposed to when he was a Yankee: That he looked managerial. You know how candidates for the highest office always want to come off looking presidential because it reassures voters that they are up to the task. For some reason, while Mattingly was in a Yankee uniform, I did not sense he projected that. Perhaps it was the familiarity. I think it was something more subtle. I think Mattingly had to get out of a Yankee uniform almost as a way to say "I am serious, I want to manage" and not simply look like he was in the line of succession only as a Yankee. By being a Dodger, his willingness to work anywhere is projected. Also, Mattingly shares with Torre that serene self-confidence that serves a leader so well. Here are my top 10 moments at Yankee Stadium, though this list could go on much longer than that. 10) Roger Clemens’ 300th win: I’ve never seen a no-hitter (okay, I was here for the Astros’ six-man no-no, but that’s not the same), I’ve never seen a 500th home run or any other type of major milestone. Watching Clemens win his 300th – especially after watching him fail to capture it a few times to that point – was pretty cool. That he got his 4,000th strikeout that night was icing on the cake. 9) 2000 World Series, Game 2: My stepfather and I were sitting on the loge level all the way out in left field in fair territory, so I can’t say I was able to see all that much. But the news eventually made its way down the line that Roger Clemens had thrown a broken bat at Mike Piazza, and replays confirmed it once I got home. The rest of the game escapes me other than that it was the last game I attended at the Stadium as a fan, but that did become one of the most memorable moments in the Subway rivalry. 8) 2001 New York-Boston Media Game: The Yankees and Red Sox media plays each other in baseball twice a year, once at Fenway Park and once at Yankee Stadium. This game, which took place on Sept. 10, 2001, was my first. I remember entering the game as a sub in the fifth inning, and as I ran out to play first base, all I could think was, “I’m playing first base at the same spot that Don Mattingly did. Whoa.” I walked and grounded out in my two ...

Photograph by wallyg on Flickr You always remember your first game and for me that would be May 18, 1980. I remember seeing my favorite player, Greg Nettles get a hit and I remember chanting “Re-ggie, Re-ggie” everytime Reggie Jackson came to the plate. Another of my heroes, Bobby Murcer, hit a home run and although the Yankees lost that game, I loved Yankee Stadium. Though the years I have been to a lot of games and seen a lot of great and sometimes not so great moments at the Stadium on TV. Some of the most memorable like Charlie Hayes’ catch to win the World Series in 1996 are shown on YES almost every day. Some like an even skinnier Pedro Martinez pitching for the Expos and striking out 10 Yankees in 1997 are not. I remember Dave Righetti striking out Wade Boggs to complete a no-hitter on July 4, 1983. Don Mattingly and Dave Winfield fighting for the batting title on the last day of the 1984 season. Sitting through 15 innings of baseball only for the Yankees to lose in 1987, but Mattingly hit a homer, which made it seem ok. I remember going to Old Timer’s Day in the 80’s and seeing both Mickey Mantle and Joe DiMaggio in person. I watched both David Wells and David Cone pitch perfect games at the Stadium from the comfort of my couch, but when I think of pitching at the Stadium I will always think of Mariano Rivera hugging that mound in some mixture of joy and relief as Aaron Boone circled the bases in 2003. I think of all the ...

Even Yogi Berra knew this was the end. As baseball said farewell to Yankee Stadium, one of the game's most beloved players stood beneath the stands in a full vintage uniform. Now 83, the man who coined the phrase "it ain't over till it's over" put his own stamp on the day. "I'm sorry to see it over, I'll tell you that," Berra said. The goodbye completed an 85-year-old run for the home of baseball's most famous team. What began with a Babe Ruth home run on an April afternoon in 1923 was likely to end with Mariano Rivera pitching on a September night. All the greats were remembered, with fans wearing a collection of jerseys that could fill a Hall of Fame. On one subway car alone, there were shirts with Derek Jeter's No. 2, the Babe's No. 3, Mickey Mantle's No. 7, Phil Rizzuto's No. 10 and Don Mattingly's No. 23. Fans were allowed on the field starting at 1 p.m. and entered through the left-field seats not far from where Aaron Boone's home run landed five years ago. ...

Since the Yankees aren't playing post season this year, I'm not avidly rooting for any one team but I must say that it would be sweet indeed to see Joe Torre go all the way with his Dodgers, especially after he was not even a mention in the Yankees' own goodbyes to their stadium. That Torre and Don Mattingly were treated with such disregard was shameful and it would be justice indeed if Torre reminded the Yankees what a superior manager he is, heading down that old familiar home stretch, this time out wearing Dodger Blue... ...

The Yankees finished 2008 with an 89-73 record and missed the playoffs for the first time since 1993, leading many to wonder what went wrong. There was a sense of uncertainty surrounding this team going back to last November and December, when amid the fallout of another ALDS loss, the managerial situation, specifically how the team handled Joe Torre's contract, mushroomed to a PR disaster. Anyone stepping into that mess, whether it was Joe Girardi, Don Mattingly, Larry Bowa, would have felt squeezed. Throw in the A-Rod contract situation and the World Series drama with Scott Boras, Andy Pettitte's vacillating between retiring and returning before signing the $16 million deal and being named in the Mitchell Report and Hank Steinbrenner's impersonation of his father, and it was an offseason to forget. ...

Any Monday Morning QBs think, one year after the fact, the Yankees should have hired Don Mattingly instead of Joe Girardi? It's easy to think that way, considering what went down with Girardi's Yankees this year. But one thing to remember is Mattingly had a turbulent winter from a personal standpoint last year. He wound up being involved in a divorce from his longtime wife. At one point police even arrested her for public intoxication and refusing to leave Mattingly's property. Sad story, indeed. And, on a secondary note, imagine how that would affected his first few months as Yankees manager? He stepped down as Dodgers hitting coach to deal with his personal issues, and returned for the second half after things had settled back home. Doubtful he would have had the same opportunity to do so with the Yankees. Clearly, things worked out for Mattingly on a professional level. The Dodgers are in the NLCS, Mattingly is being heralded for his job as hitting coach , and he looks like a sure bet to eventually take over for Joe Torre as Dodgers manager someday. In the end, for all parties, things probably worked out for the best. ...

One of the notable stories from yesterday was the absence of Joe Torre and Don Mattingly from the pre-game ceremonies on Sunday. According to both the Globe  and Herald , the Red Sox will retire Johnny Pesky's number 6 prior to Friday night's game v. the MFY.  The Red Sox will break their traditional requirements for a player's number to be retired: that he is in the Hall of Fame, that he ended his career with the club, and that he played at least 10 seasons for the Red Sox. Pesky is not in the Hall of Fame. I'm very happy Pesky will be honored, and have always thought the Sox' retired number policy was stupid.  The Yankees have done a better job with their retired numbers, honoring non-Hall of Famers like Thurman, Munson, Don Mattingly, Elston Howard, and Ron Guidry. Hopefully the Pesky ceremony signals a loosening of the Sox' retired number policy.  Here are some other players that should be honored: Jimmie Foxx Dom DiMaggio Luis Tiant Tris Speaker Jim Rice Dwight Evans Wade Boggs Pedro Martinez (when he retires).  ...

Normally when a team has basically the worst offense ever, the general manger might expect a "screw you guys, I'm going home" speech from the hitting coach. (Newsday photo / David L. Pokress) This one is dedicated to Mom, Dad, my brother and everyone else who drank inordinate amounts of Dellwood milk in the 1980s to get enough proofs of purchase to earn free tickets to a Yankee game. (Those seats were usually pretty good, too!) That was just one of the many memories running through my mind Sunday afternoon, evening and night as I sat in Yankee Stadium for the final game . Yankee Stadium is a sports icon, a pop culture icon, a life icon for its fans. It's every bit the cathedral that people say it is. From the first moment you make it through the section runway and see that blue wall and green grass, you're fixated on everything that is Yankee Stadium. Ruth. Gehrig. DiMaggio. Mantle. Reggie. The Pope. The Beatles. The greatest game ever played. Berra. Mattingly. Jeter. Rivera. Etc. As I mulled about the Stadium for more than 10 hours with fellow Pet Rocker Adam, aka Hokies fan Big Cat , my brain went in roughly 46 directions trying to remember where I sat for more than 100 games in The Stadium. How I shed a few tears in Row 3 on Aug. 31, 1997 when my childhood hero Don Mattingly had his number retired. How Restaurant friend Rob, Consultant friend Jay and I stayed through seven rounds of Frank Sinatra's "New York, New York" on Oct. 15, 2001, after the Yankees beat the A's in Game 5 of the ALDS (the year of the "Jeter Flip Play" when the Yanks dropped the first two games of the series). ...
