Enrico Pieranunzi Plays Domenico Scarlatti by Enrico Pieranunzi ... Source: www.independent.co.uk --- 32 days ago
A grand hotel on boutique scale, the 15-room San Domenico House, just off Sloane Square, is a little bit of Chelsea posh newly acquired by a flamboyant Italian family hotelier. The fact that place was converted from two redbrick Victorian houses to the original Sloane Hotel by a chic French designer only adds to its opulence. This has been duly noted by the AA which has just awarded it Best London B&B for 2008/09. ...

Ten out of ten for Coleen Lee's Scarlatti. If Francesco Nicholai's Complete Keyboard Sonatas, Vol. 9 was a study of Scarlatti's minor key, moderately paced sonatas, then Coleen Lee's Complete Keyboard Sonatas, Vol. 10 is a study in Scarlatti presto barn burning sonatas. Lee brings to the keyboard a commanding approach that approximates Vladimir Horowitz in his Scarlatti. But this is no... ...

Domenico Scarlatti (1685–1757) Complete Sonatas Vol. 9 Francesco Nicholai, piano Naxos Records 2008 Naxos Records newest addition to its ongoing survey of Domenico Scarlatti's complete piano sonatas is a carefully considered and intentionally paced affair. Rather than opening the recital with a gang-buster presto, pianist Francesco Nicholai chooses Scarlatti's D minor sonata, K. 52, marked something considerable less than allegro. Nicholai approached the piece as Daniel Barenboim did Bach's Goldberg s in 1991, slowly, thoughtfully, and romantically. This minor key composition (K. 52) was found in the fourteenth of the Scarlatti's Venice albums of 1742. It was one of the master's earliest slow movements, already betraying a fully formed vision and sound. It is one of several minor key compositions populating this recording. All reveal Scarlatti as a master of pre-Romantic musical thought, an ability to tap into the dark chocolate soul of minor keys to pull out the rich decadent center, exposing it for the musical delight that it is. Nicholai proves equally adept at interpreting these difficult pieces as illustrated in his performances of The Sonata in D minor, K.77 and The Sonata in D minor, K.176. The pianist treats these pieces respectfully, never turning up the heat enough to melt them. Nicholai justifies every nuance and pedal depression with a palpably integrated execution full of pathos and light. The Sonatas in G major, K.79 and ... Source: philnelson.name --- 10 days ago

Domenico Scarlatti Complete Keyboard Sonatas, Vol. 10 Coleen Lee, piano Naxos Records 2008 If Francesco Nicholai's Complete Keyboard Sonatas, Vol. But this is no mere comparison. Lee brings the same inventive reverence and sense of wonder to the pieces. Perhaps a more accurate simile would be that Lee performs Scarlatti as one would expect Johann Sebastian Bach to, had he done so. Lee begins her recital with with the D Major Sonata, K. 29, a Horowitz standard. Where Horowitz established a foundation for the piece, building a cathedral with it, Lee applies Newtonian Mechanics to the music, giving the sonata a spirited momentum, one where the notes cascade just enough in control to make it a perfect high-wire performance. The Bach angle comes into play with the K. 29's sister sonata in D Minor, K. 19. Here Lee performs the piece like one of Bach's inventions. Both the K. 29 and K. 19 sonatas are marked presto , and presto they are. Such profound playing infects the other D Major sonatas: K. 23 ( allegro ), K. 45 ( presto ), and K. 53 ( allegro ). Another coupling of major and minor key sonatas is the aforementioned D Major, K. 23, an ebullient and slightly governed d ... Source: manalogue.com --- 21 days ago
