"If you want a friend in Washington," Harry Truman advised, "get a dog." And so the presidents have done. Some presidential pooches have been direct parties to history; others have had behind-the-scenes duties as children's pets and guard Dogs. They all serve their country in the diplomatic mission of humanizing the nation's top dog. ...

CHICAGO -- Americans will be throwing more hot Dogs and hamburgers on their backyard grills rather than higher-priced meat like steaks this July 4 U.S. Independence Day holiday as the recession and high unemployment crimp celebrations, Reuters reports . John Kleist, analyst with the McHenry, Ill-based advisory firm Allendale Inc., said: It will be the cheaper cuts that will take the majority of the business. We would do well to say that meat movement over the holiday was decent. That is the best we can hope for. Beef and pork sales, which are normally robust in the spring and summer for barbecues, have been slow as consumers either have less cash to spend or worry about their jobs, Reuters said. The slow meat sales have been particularly bad for cattle and hog producers who are already struggling with high feed costs. Earlier this year, Bloomberg News looked at how recessionary eating habits were leading consumers to choose chicken over beef. The situation is simply budgeting, said Ron Plain, agricultural economist at the University of Missouri: Until the economy improves, we are going to see pressure on the quality meats. That is keeping pressure on livestock prices People are just wanting to eat cheaper. PHOTO: PETER J. THOMPSON/NATIONAL POST ...

I remember watching Barry Bonds set up camp at home plate. He always looked like he needed oil—not so much for his joints, but for his armor. That elbow "pad" he wore looked like a complicated device Leonardo da Vinci fashioned long ago when focusing on medieval weaponry. Top that off with bionic batting gloves and super-sized wristbands, and you had what amounted to a Transformer. I'm still not sure if he wore four regular wristbands or two industrial models. In any case, I always thought the ensemble looked ridiculous. Steroids aside, I'd keep him out of the Hall for his accessorizing alone. The fact that flashing the leather was a very literal case with him and his lackadaisical, one-handed grabs only lent credence to my vision of him as a Hot Dog, First Class. Yeah, I know he backed up all that (bad) attitude with performance, but so did Ty Cobb, without all the fashion statements. Sadly, Barry's look is the norm today rather than the exception. I still haven't figured out the need for it all, other than it’s some kind of strange plumage to attract attention. I'd think standing at home plate in front of 40,000 fanatics would have that covered. What happened to the pride associated with blisters and calluses and bruises? These guys have the hands of accountants. And if wearing the flashy accessories wasn’t enough, you have the fidget factor to go with it as well. I'll cite Nomar Garciaparra of the Oakland Athletics and Skip Schu ...

Ethiopian man shackles girl with Dogs for 18 years By Tsegaye Tadesse ADDIS ABABA ( Reuters ) - Hundreds of women have rallied to demand the death penalty for a man who shackled a girl with Dogs for 18 years and abused her, the Ethiopian News Agency (ENA) reported on Friday. The unnamed suspect from Adama -- a town 100 km east of the capital Addis Ababa -- imprisoned the girl from the age of four, the agency said. The man took custody of her when his mother, who had been caring for the girl, died. The victim's own mother suffered from mental illness. "The suspect tortured, violated and brutally abused the girl for 18 years, shackling her with Dogs in a secluded room inside his home," police told ENA. "He starved the girl, only throwing her crumbs of bread once in a while, and she was forced to share the Dogs' food to survive. She is in poor health." The case echoes that of Austrian Josef Fritzl, whose trial for imprisoning his daughter in a basement for 24 years and fathering seven children with her captured world attention. Fritzl was sentenced to life in prison in March. Police say the girl -- who is now 22 -- is suffering from multiple wounds and is being treated in a hospital in the town. Mayor of Adama, Tadelle Shigute, said the man will appear in court soon but did not give a date. "It's hoped that he will receive a penalty which is befitting his crimes," said Tadelle. ...
