An anonymous reader writes "Researchers have found that the long-held belief that only the outer, valence, electrons of an atom interact may be false. Computer simulations have shown that at pressures like those in the center of the Earth the inner, core, electrons of lithium also interact ." Read more of this story at Slashdot. ... I've just received my favourite ever comment for an entry. It's just here . It's a bloomin' corker; there's length and anger. I like a squabble and it's been a while since I got all that hate mail about the chicken stuff here and here . In the most fabulous turn of events, I've got into battle with a woman called Pam. The subject is poodles. It's the most excitin' thing that's happened all week. I said that an elaborately-trimmed standard poodle as a pet would be too poncey for me . Pam said that I've got a lower IQ than a poodle (she may be right on that one). She also said that I'm not "confident in my masculinity." Well let me tell you, Pam, I've been openly male for years. She still hasn't persuaded me that taking a coiffured standard poodle for a walk through the village would convince anyone that I am straight. ... Source: www.libraryjournal.com --- 42 days ago

Two weeks ago, a man’s life ended in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was gunned down in the darkened living room of the home he had had recently rented, while his wife of two weeks watched helplessly as the life drained from his body. The perpetrators, (of which there were two), were arrested and confessed shortly thereafter. It turns out that the triggerman had been persuaded to accompany his friend to this home in order to execute the occupant of the property for the unspeakable atrocity of sleeping with the latter’s girlfriend. As already noted, their mission was a complete success; the lone exception being that the intended victim had moved from the property some weeks before. The man who died was, by all accounts, a decent, hard working human being, who had just happened to rent the wrong house. On the same day, halfway around the world, a different scenario played out; a scenario which has become so commonplace that most of us are now immune to the daily intonations of this occurrence on the nightly news. Someone had been persuaded that the highest and best use of his life involved strapping a mass of explosives to his body and strolling into the midst of a busy market in Baghdad. Over twenty people lost their lives, while scores of others suffered horrible injuries. The Albuquerque story is just one of thousands that play out daily in the States. Crime, drug abuse, contempt for education and a complete lack of sexual mores has abso ... Source: www.overflux.com --- 43 days ago
Why is it that when something seems to be different whether good or bad the general public views it as bad. My thing is that our physics class went to the park to day and did a nature scavenger hunt. When we got through we were allowed to play on the playground, so i jumped on the swings. i got going and flipped out backwards doing the flip out of the swing and landing square on my feet. I would have thought the physics teacher would have been proud of my use of gravity, but oh to the contrary. she fussed at me and made me live the swing sets claiming i WOULD brake my neak. why is it where i live they tear down playground, at the 9th grade you stop having PE and then they get on to you for being lazy and fat. claim that it is a bad thing to be able to do such a simple activity such as flipping out of a swing on to nice soft sand. plz respond to this it really puzzles me how they could be so paradoxal.(and yes that is the adjective form of paradox i checked dictionary.com to make sure)!! ... Generally, we have accepted lock-stock-and-barrel the story that markets should not be intervened with (except when they need to be so as to keep financiers well-heeled). Here's an interesting take on markets, via the blog Peace, Order and Good Government, eh ... . Memes of the market The underlying force of claims about how great markets are doesn’t really come from the math or its relationship to reality. The math doesn’t relate to reality worth beans, and even if it did nobody would grok that. No, what makes “free markets” so compelling is more a group of philosophical ideas, a story about people and the world. As I see it, it goes something like this: Markets are natural; they are expressions of inherent (competitive) human nature. As such, they are inevitable. But also, that makes them perfect or at least unimprovable, because nature cannot be improved on. Things might seem imperfect in nature, but nature is so complex that you can’t tinker without doing more harm than good. Markets are like this—even when they seem to fail, they are the natural course, and interfering with their infinitely complex operations will inevitably make things worse. We cannot understand enough to intervene successfully. Oddly, at the same time as this there is a technocratic story that goes We understand precisely how the economy works, so you proles should just shut up and trust us. Neither of these stories is true. For one thing, markets do not represe ... Source: digg.com --- 39 days ago
