Preoccupied with life's developments, which range from leaving the paper to getting the hole in my ceiling fixed, I asked one of our loyal readers to serve as a citizen journalist last night, and pass on to us what transpired at the city's meeting on the future of Dog parks. We won't identify our reporter here -- suffice to say she is the mom of Bimini and a fairly regular vistor to the city's ONLY Dog Park, Canton Dog Park. Full Disclosure: While our budget is limited, our reporter was promised payment in the form of a beer, or maybe we said two. Here is her report: OK, here goes..mind u I'm typing on my phone and had a glass of wine w/ dinner, so bear with me. Patterson Park was represented by both the Dog Park group and the general friends of patterson Park group. locust point was also represented, as was canton Dog Park. both potential Dog Park groups, particularly patterson Park, expressed frustrations with the city. They just want a list of requirements and no additions once those requirements are met. makes sense. and the councilpeople agreed. issues of liability, maintenance, and volunteers were brought up. there was also the mention of off-leash times, rather than fenced in areas. Jim Kraft stated numerous times that there needs to be a city-wide set of guidelines/application for Dog parks, not just on a case by case basis. everyone attending the meeting, including the new director of rec & parks, seemed on board with get ...

Ocean City, always looking for ways to lure us inlanders to the beach, has finally come up with a good one: It has opened its first off-leash Dog Park. Local officials and residents gathered Tuesday morning for the dedication of the Ocean City Dog Playground in Little Salisbury Park. It's located behind the tennis courts on 94th Street. The three-quarter acre Park cost $43,000 to create. It sports a Dog friendly water fountain, bioldegradable bags, garbage cans, picnic tables and separate areas for big dogs and little dogs, according to an article in delmarvanow.com . Local Dog owners can get a year-round access key for $50. Non-residents can get one for $100, or buy a 7-day pass from the city for $15. Mayor Richard Meehan admitted it was about time the city had a Dog Park. "It's long overdue." ...

Click here to read Mason Adams' report about last night's neighborhood meeting about the proposed city Dog Park's location in Highland Park. Another, more widely-pubicized meeting will be planned by the city's parks and recreation department to seek more input from all city residents, including those who live in Old Southwest. I will post the meeting time and place here as soon as it is set, but if you live in the city you should be getting an announcement about the forum in the mail. Residents who live near Highland Park have voiced concerns that the Park will cause problems, including smell, noise and an interuption of sledding on the one to two days a year Roanoke gets enough flurries to cover the ground. Joe Shields of Old Southwest Inc, addressed those concerns at last night's neighborhood meeting, and assured residents that the Dog Park would be regulated. He said dogs would be controlled and supervised by adults while in the Park, and pointed out that by increasing the number of law-abiding citizens and their dogs in the area, it could help keep away less desireable folks and reduce crime. ...

For any critics who think dogs cannot play well together in a Park-like setting should have been at my house yesterday morning. Dave Stice, a contractor that has done much work for us over the last couple of years and really become a friend, always brings at least one of his three border collies to work with him. He is currently doing some work for our next door neighbors, and we told him he could feel free to put his dogs in our yard while he was busy. Here's my little pack out playing with Thunderpants, Stice's border collie, and enjoying a visit with another neighbor, Beth Hall, a retired Roanoke County schoolteacher who has endeared herself to the neighborhood pooches with kind words and a steady stream of Dog biscuits. Thunderpants really appreciated the baby pool we fill up on hot days. The greyhounds have known Thunderpants since he was a pup, but this was the first time Storm had met TP. All the dogs got along quiet nicely. ...

Dr. Dog dig the old stuff. Not only does Fate , the Philly quintet's third album, have songs named "The Old Days," "Uncovering the Old," and "100 Years," but its choirboy vocals, spiky guitar solos, and splashes of blue-eyed soul evoke Smile -era Beach Boys and the Band. Heck, even Stephen Foster would tip his hat to the rickety keyboard lines and lyrics about trains. Though Fate 's sepia sweetness and the band's ever-improving instrumental ingenuity (see 'em live!) can't mask a vaguely troubling lack of original ideas, Dr. Dog wears the vintage look amiably well. ...
